Bad Guys 3 Prospects Addressed By Director After Sequel’s $22M Box Office Debut

The Bad Guys 2 director discusses the possibility of a third movie after the sequel’s solid debut. The sequel to DreamWorks’ 2022 original animated film arrived in theaters on August 1, and sees a group of reformed criminals–Mr. Wolf, Mr. Snake, Mr. Piranha, Mr. Shark, and Ms. Tarantula–find themselves in the middle of a high-stakes heist while trying to be good.

The movie opened to $9.1 million on its first day in theaters and is estimated to earn around $22 million from its opening weekend.

In an interview with Variety, Pierre Perifel, who co-directed the film with JP Sans, talked a little bit about the possibility of The Bad Guys 3. The director admitted that he’s “definitely” thinking about a third movie and has “tons of ideas.” However, Perifel also stressed that the choice ultimately lies in the audience’s hands. Read his comment below in response to whether he’s thinking about doing another film:

Definitely. The main thing is, will the audience love this? Is the audience going to be here? If the audience wants a third “Bad Guys,” we’re already thinking. We have tons of ideas because this world is such a fantastic toolbox, and we’ve laid out thoughts on what a third could be.

What This Means For The Bad Guys 3

In 2022, The Bad Guys amᴀssed over $250 million at the global box office against a reported budget of $70 million, which prompted the animated studio to order another movie in 2024 to further capitalize on its success. The original movie made $8 million in North America on its first day and garnered a total of $23 million during its opening box office.

The new sequel has already seen a bigger opening than its predecessor, indicating continued interest in the growing franchise. In terms of reception, the Bad Guys sequel received overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics and fans alike, already securing an 85% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes (from 74 reviews) as well as a near-perfect audience score of 95%.

While the numbers might change with time, this puts the sequel at a similar status in comparison to the original, which has an 88% critic score and a 93% audience score. This suggests that The Bad Guys 2 captivates the audience just as much as the original did.

Our Take On A Potential The Bad Guys 3

The Bad Guys 3 is a strong possibility if the 2025 sequel ends up doing very well at the box office. Pierre Perifel’s comment reveals that the creative team behind the movie series remains pᴀssionate and stimulated about the IP. If there’s a demand, the creators and the studio will likely grant the audience’s wishes.

Meanwhile, the 2025 sequel serves as fertile ground for a potential third movie. The franchise’s bigger sequel potential is strongly hinted at in The Bad Guys 2 ending and post-credits scene, when (SPOILERS) The Bad Guys’ villain is revealed to have played a much bigger role in the events.
