Jurᴀssic World Rebirth has crossed a new box office milestone, pᴀssing a Will Smith classic to join a sci-fi top 25 box office chart. Directed by Gareth Edwards, the latest film in the Jurᴀssic Park franchise stars Scarlett Johansson as Zora Bennett, the leader of a team tasked with recovering valuable dinosaur DNA for a medical breakthrough.
Johansson is joined in the Jurᴀssic World Rebirth cast by Jonathan Bailey, Mahershala Ali, Luna Blaise, Rupert Friend, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, among others. Hitting theaters in early July, the Jurᴀssic film got off to a respectable start at the box office, grossing $92 million domestically.
Per new data from The Numbers, Jurᴀssic World Rebirth has now grossed $308 million domestically, which puts it ahead of Independence Day‘s $306 million. This new milestone makes Rebirth the 25th highest-grossing sci-fi movie domestically of all time, with the Smith film falling to 26th place.
Worldwide, Independence Day is still winning, however, boasting a strong global total of $817 million compared to Rebirth‘s $741 million. It’s also worth noting that the Independence Day box office figures above have not been adjusted for inflation.
What This Means For Jurᴀssic World Rebirth
Now about a month into its theatrical run, Rebirth may not climb too much higher on this top 25 chart. In 24th place is Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002) at $310 million. Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983) and Jumanji: The Next Level (2019) occupy places 23 and 22, respectively, at $316 million.
Rebirth seems likely to pᴀss Attack of the Clones, but it’s not yet clear whether it will manage to beat both Return of the Jedi and Jumanji. Even if it doesn’t manage to climb too many more positions, the film has still been a notable success.
Jurᴀssic World Rebirth‘s production budget is estimated to be about $180 million. Using the standard Hollywood rule of thumb, the film could be looking at a break-even point of $450 million, a figure it has now far exceeded globally.
Though the film will undoubtedly be profitable, it will fall short of previous Jurᴀssic World movies at the box office. 2022’s poorly reviewed Jurᴀssic World Dominion, for example, grossed just over $1 billion worldwide, a figure that Rebirth will not be hitting. This could be a sign of diminishing interest in the franchise.
Our Take On Jurᴀssic World Rebirth’s New Box Office Milestone
Jurᴀssic World Rebirth reviews were mixed from critics, but the film’s success suggests general audiences are still finding plenty to enjoy with the dinosaur chaos. Even though the latest film may have fallen short of the previous Jurᴀssic World movies, its success means there will likely be additional installments in the franchise.
As far as sci-fi movies go, Independence Day remains a classic, and it’s one of the seminal movies of Smith’s career. Jurᴀssic World Rebirth may have now surpᴀssed the film domestically, but the seventh installment in this dinosaur franchise probably won’t experience the same cultural longevity.
