WARNING: This article contains SPOILERS for Happy Gilmore 2.Happy Gilmore 2 has no shortage of dark jokes, but the film stood out for its comedic jab at a professional golfer’s real-life arrest. As it presents the тιтular character’s return to professional golf after a long retirement, Adam Sandler’s Happy Gilmore 2 has him playing alongside multiple real-life golfers.
Among Happy Gilmore 2‘s many celebrity cameos is Scottie Scheffler, a four-time championship winner who was ranked the number one pro golfer in the world. Scottie Scheffler plays a fairly prominent role as one of Happy’s allies out on the course.
That doesn’t save Scheffler from the filmmakers making jokes at his expense. Some are lighthearted, but one referenced a real-life controversy in a surprising way. However, Scheffler is clearly in on the joke about him in Happy Gilmore 2, making it an especially memorable moment in this wacky comedy movie.
Scottie Scheffler Is Arrested (Again) In Happy Gilmore 2
Scottie Scheffler Gets In Trouble While Playing Golf In Happy Gilmore 2
Scheffler was arrested on May 17, 2024, after he reportedly tried to drive to the Valhalla Golf Club entrance, which had been blocked by traffic due to a fatal crash that occurred earlier in the day (via ESPN). He was stopped by a police officer, but Scheffler allegedly refused to listen to instructions and drove forward, dragging the officer to the ground and injuring him (via CNN).
ESPN stated that Scheffler was soon arrested and charged with “second-degree ᴀssault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic.” However, there was no body camera footage of the incident, which Scheffler called a “big misunderstanding” (via CNN). He was released from prison later the same day, and the charges were soon dropped.
Just as the real Scheffler was accused of ᴀssault, the golfer’s character in Happy Gilmore 2 was arrested for punching his opponent during Maxi Golf’s extreme compeтιтion.
Just as the real Scheffler was accused of hurting a police officer, the golfer’s character in Happy Gilmore 2 was arrested for punching his opponent during Maxi Golf’s extreme compeтιтion. Scheffler even references his real-life arrest when his character says, “Not again,” before being taken away by police. Scheffler then spends the rest of the film in a jail cell.
There is even a mid-credits scene after Happy Gilmore 2‘s ending of him wanting to stay in prison, having made himself comfortable, until he has dinner there.
Hats off to Scheffler for having a sense of humor with the film’s joke about his arrest. This wouldn’t be the first time a Happy Gilmore film has had a celebrity get into a brawl, as the late, great Bob Barker would attest. While Scheffler’s fight on the golf course is very brief, the jokes that result from it make it a standout part of Happy Gilmore 2.
