$428M Video Game Movie Starring Jack Quaid Surges On Netflix’s Global Charts

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s 2018 sci-fi movie climbs Netflix’s streaming charts seven years after its release. The box-office heavy hitter has starred in numerous commercially successful films. From Furious 7, which earned over $1.46 billion in 2015, to Moana 2 in 2024, which also crossed the $1 billion milestone, movies that feature The Rock can be wildly profitable, though some can also flop at the box office.

Aside from Moana 2, the actor had a Christmas-themed movie out last year. Red One saw The Rock starring opposite Chris Evans and J.K. Simmons as the head of North Pole security, Callum Drift, who teams up with Evans’ hacker to find Simmons’ kidnapped Santa on Christmas Eve. While the movie didn’t earn enough to make up for the budget, it achieved significant streaming success when it debuted on Prime Video.

The actor currently has 13 projects in the pipeline and will next be seen as MMC fighter Mark Kerr in The Smashing Machine, coming to theaters on October 3.

Dwayne Johnson’s Rampage Is One Of The Top 10 Movies On Netflix Right Now

It’s Also Among The Top 10 Movies In 21 Countries

Joining Johnson in the star-studded cast of Rampage are Jack Quaid, Jake Lacy, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Marley Shelton, and many others. The movie grossed over $481 million in total against a $120 million budget, earning $101 million from the domestic box office and $327 million internationally, making it the actor’s 13th highest-grossing pic.

Seven years later, Rampage claimed a spot on Netflix’s global chart. Having garnered 4 million views, this is the first time the movie has appeared on the Top 10 global chart. Currently the No.8 most popular film on the streamer between July 25 and 27, the movie is also among the Top 10 lists in 21 countries and the No.1 most popular movie in Jamaica.

What This Means For Rampage

Rampage’s Video Game Adaptation Matches The Current Trend

Rampage isn’t available to watch on Netflix US, but certain regions have access to the movie, which could contribute to its international and regional success. Directed by Brad Peyton, the 2018 sci-fi thriller, based on the 1980s arcade game of the same name, sees a genetic experiment causing three animals to mutate into monsters. Johnson played the primatologist, who utilized his bond with the gorilla to try and find a solution to prevent a global catastrophe.

With the growing interest in video game adaptations and science fiction thrillers, Rampage‘s streaming resurgence makes sense. While the movie isn’t available for those in the US, it can be rented or bought on Prime Video, starting as low as $3.99.
