Arnold Schwarzenegger has had a prolific but inconsistent career. On the one hand, he has been part of some huge action movies, including The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Both are regarded as sci-fi action classics, and have maintained interest even after decades.
On the other hand, the actor has had his fair share of flops over the course of his career. Such is the case, for example, with his 1985 version of Red Sonja. Despite its basis in existing comic book material, the film ended up making only $6.9 million worldwide. The following year, he released Raw Deal, which made only $16.2 million.
Schwarzenegger has particularly struggled in recent years, decades after his career peak. His 2017 film Aftermath, for example, did not even get a wide release in the United States and made less than $1 million from international markets. Now, one of his other 21st century bombs is doing well on streaming.
Sabotage Becomes A Streaming Hit Over A Decade Later
The Movie Flopped In Theaters
Sabotage has now become a streaming hit. The 2014 movie was directed by David Ayer, and featured Schwarzenegger as one of the members of a DEA task force who starts getting taken down one by one after they rob a drug cartel safe house. In addition to Schwarzenegger, the cast includes Sam Worthington, Terrence Howard, Josh Holloway, Olivia Williams, and Joe Manganiello.
The movie bombed at the box office upon its release, and also received negative reviews. Sabotage grossed only $22.1 million worldwide, failing to make back its modest $35 million budget. The movie also did not sit well with critics, as it had a 21% Tomatometer and only a slightly higher 36% audience Popcornmeter.
As per FlixPatrol, Sabotage has now become a hit on streaming. The movie is ranked no. 10 on Prime Video’s top 10 movies in the United States today, July 30. It joins a list that includes more recent films such as Wicked, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and The Accountant 2.
What This Means For Sabotage
Schwarzenegger Can Still Win Over Audiences
Sabotage was one of the lowest-grossing movies in Schwarzenegger’s career. It also did not do any favors for Ayer, who had already made a successful film with End of Watch a few years prior. In fact, this marked a low point for a lot of the main cast.
The movie’s reappearance on the streaming charts, however, shows that the audience’s interest in Schwarzenegger movies can overcome even negative reviews. This did not work for Sabotage when it was in theaters, but its streaming success is still a worthwhile testament to the actor’s impact.
