Voltron star Sterling K. Brown shares new details about the live-action adaptation at San Diego Comic-Con. Starring Brown, Henry Cavill, and Rita Ora, the new Voltron movie, based on the beloved ’80s animated television series, is in development with Amazon MGM Studios.
Currently without a release date, production on Voltron was wrapped in May, with the movie expected to be part of Amazon MGM’s 2026 slate. It was directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber (Skyscraper, Red Notice).
At the Paradise panel at the SDCC, where ScreenRant was in attendance, Brown revealed unexpected new details about the upcoming Voltron movie. When asked about the adaptation, Brown tried to play coy, insisting that he wasn’t at liberty to talk about it.
However, he teased Cavill’s “dreamy” role and described the film as being “heartfelt… big and bodacious and dynamic,” which is why the post-production is taking 48 weeks. He also shared that he would sign a contract for a sequel, adding, “God-willing, we’ll get the chance to do another one.“
What This Means For The Live-Action Voltron
Voltron Will Likely Arrive Next Year
48 weeks would put the post-production time at roughly 11 months, and thus allow the new Voltron movie’s release window to be around spring 2026. However, there’s also a possibility that Brown isn’t talking literally. Either way, his update seems to align with the timeline in previous reports.
The Paradise actor’s involvement in the movie was announced last year. Still, there’s no official announcement about which role he’ll be playing. Similarly, the actor didn’t disclose anything specific about the plot or his character in the panel, only that he plays someone from “the original IP.” This indicates a top level of secrecy around the upcoming project and doesn’t necessarily help narrow the list.
While there’s currently no confirmation or solid news about the movie getting a sequel, Brown wouldn’t hesitate to jump on a second film if there’s a chance. Though his comment mostly serves to hype up the upcoming film, it also seems to hint at his character’s sequel potential in the upcoming live-action adaptation.
Our Take On The Live-Action Voltron
Voltron Is Under тιԍнт Wraps
Co-written and directed by Thurber, much of the upcoming Voltron adaptation still remains a mystery to fans. Similar to Brown’s role in the movie, who Cavill will play is also unknown. While plot details have yet to be revealed, the original series follows five young pilots who join forces to control the powerful mega-robot Voltron as they face threats in space.
Brown’s comments offer some reᴀssurance but also lead to more questions. The original animated series focused on teamwork and unity. The official Voltron Instagram account recently emphasized found family, which could potentially shed some light on the upcoming movie’s themes and how it updates the ’80s animation.
