“There Are Plans For More…”: Mortal Kombat 3 Teased After Sequel’s Record-Breaking Trailer

Mortal Kombat 3 has already been teased following the upcoming sequel’s record-breaking trailer. The red-band trailer for Mortal Kombat II amᴀssed 106 million views in its first 24 hours, following its initial release on July 17. Featuring Karl Urban as Johnny Cage, the sequel’s trailer welcomed the character to the movie franchise and teased his recruitment as an Earthrealm champion.

The movie is slated for release in October and will finally introduce the tournament the Mortal Kombat games are best known for. Excitement is already tracking ahead of the first movie, which was released right as theaters were opening back up again amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Director Simon McQuiod returns for the sequel.

In an interview with FutureBoyWho, Mortal Kombat II’s producer Todd Garner talked about the franchise’s future, teasing what might lie ahead for a third movie. Garner stated, “We’re hoping that this is not the end of the franchise” and that “there are plans going forward; other characters that aren’t in this movie, characters that may come back…

Furthermore, Garner stated that, “if we’re allowed to do further movies – hopefully this one does well enough – there’s chances to do other things, spin-offs, another sequel to propel the story.” As a result, it appears there’s a larger plan for the franchise which will focus on exploring the different versions of characters, various fatalities, and stages.

What This Means For The Mortal Kombat Franchise

Garner’s Update Teases A Huge Potential Movie Franchise (With Spin-Offs)

2021’s Mortal Kombat movie only managed to gross $84 million at the worldwide box office, marking a disappointing start to the modern reboot. The commercial failure was especially surprising considering the franchise’s popularity. However, Mortal Kombat was restricted by the pandemic, releasing on HBO Max at the same time as theaters, and it actually became the streaming service’s most successful film launch.

2021’s Mortal Kombat was also hit with mixed reviews from critics upon its release, earning itself a 55% Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes. However, not every film needs to be critically acclaimed for it to be enjoyable, and Mortal Kombat is testament to that, as the much more positive 85% Popcornmeter score from fans showcases a real enjoyment of the film.

The franchise has become the best-selling fighting game тιтle worldwide, and its movie sequel is well-positioned to earn more in theaters than its predecessor. With Mortal Kombat II’s trailer kicking up such a storm, it is easy to see that there is still plenty of hype from fans for more Mortal Kombat movies, which seems quite likely based on Garner’s comments.

Our Take On Mortal Kombat 3’s Chances

It Looks Like This Franchise Has A Bright Future Ahead

Therefore, it’s great that Garner has revealed there are future plans in place to continue the movie franchise. With potential character development over time, we will hopefully see many fan-favorite variations, cool storylines, and even possible spin-offs. With the hype already quite high for the upcoming sequel, there’s a good chance it can perform well enough to greenlight a Mortal Kombat 3.
