The exciting first trailer has been revealed for Avatar: Fire and Ash. One of the most anticipated movies of the year, it is the third movie in James Cameron’s acclaimed Avatar franchise. It follows the record-breaking first two movies and is set for release on December 19.
This time, the movie will see the Sully family face a new threat. As per the synopsis, the Sullys and their fellow Na’vi will encounter the antagonistic Ash Clan, led by the tough Varang (Oona Chaplin). The Avatar: Fire and Ash cast also includes Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, David Thewlis, Jemaine Clement, Cliff Curtis, and Stephen Lang.
Now, Avatar has revealed the first trailer for Fire and Ash. After reintroducing audiences to the world of Pandora, Jake Sully’s oldest son, Lo’ak, is seen interacting with the Metkayina clan’s Tsiyera. Other impressive Pandoran landscapes are teased, including majestic flying vessels and a volcano-like formation.
Plot-wise, tensions between the Sully family are soon revealed. In one sH๏τ, Lo’ak sulks away from his father, Jake, and in another, Jake confronts Neytiri. Most notably, the first full look at antagonist Varang and her Ash Clan is shown as they fight with fire and wear red face paint and adornments.
What This Means For Avatar: Fire And Ash
The Sully Children Have Intense Storylines
While the trailer by no means spoils the whole plot for Avatar 3, it confirms a lot of key beats. For one, Quaritch is back and as threatening as ever. Later in the trailer, his Na’vi form (which he transitioned into for The Way of Water) walks into the stronghold for Varang’s clan, suggesting he’ll end up joining forces with them.
The trailer also confirms the expanded role of Jake and Neytiri’s children. The Metkayina clan from the second film have not been forgotten. In fact, Lo’ak’s bond with Tsiyera seems to be deepening. At the same time, his relationship with Jake continues to fracture.
Tuk is only briefly featured in the trailer, but both Kiri and Spider get significant screentime. It is already known that Spider will reunite with Quaritch, his biological father, but the character is also glimpsed in significant peril here. Kiri appears to be captured by Varang, who tells her that her goddess, presumably Eywa, “has no dominion here.”
Our Take On The Avatar: Fire And Ash Trailer
The Plot Seems The Most Complex Yet
Unsurprisingly, the Avatar 3 trailer is as visually breathtaking as ever. Brief glimpses of some of the new landscapes and creatures have been previously revealed, but the trailer really emphasizes the variety of environments the threequel will take on. The swampier Pandoran landscapes will interact with majestic cloud-filled skies in this breathtaking new film.
Just as importantly, Avatar: Fire and Ash seems by far the most plot-rich of the movies so far. The Way of Water did a lot of leg work to establish the Sully family and planted seeds for its various members’ arcs. The third film will see these relationships and character arcs flourish as each person goes on a unique and fascinating journey in Avatar: Fire and Ash.
