10 Zombie Movies That Make The Unᴅᴇᴀᴅ Hilarious

For horror fans, there are several zombie movies that are hilarious, from zombie rom-coms to satires and slapstick monster movies. George Romero created the zombies as they exist today in his iconic movie Night of the Living ᴅᴇᴀᴅ. Before that, the zombie was more of a Caribbean voodoo creation, but Romero’s zombies were a hit.

Since that time, zombies have become the most overwhelming monsters in movies, and thanks to TV shows like The Walking ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, zombies have oversaturated the market. However, along the way, several zombie comedies have also emerged, and while some are strictly B-tier entertainment, others have become instant classics.

ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Snow (2009)

Zombie Nazis

ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Snow is an acquired taste. However, people who love zombie movies that are extra gruesome with dark humor will find a lot to like here. The Norwegian film follows a group of students vacationing in a small cabin near Øksfjord. This then takes the “cabin in the woods” format, moves it to a snowy mountain, and unleashes the zombies.

The thing about these zombies is that they are World War II Nazis, brought back to life to retrieve their gold. The story reveals that these Nazis abused and tortured locals until the people turned on them, killed many, and chased the rest into the mountains. The Nazi soldiers had previously stolen valuables, and the vacationers found the loot.

The movie is not an outright comedy, but it features dark humor and grotesque kills that push the zombie movie into the realm of satire. There is a moment when a person is saved from falling off a cliff by grabbing a zombie’s entrails and holding on for dear life. This is the sort of movie anyone watching ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Snow and its sequel should expect.

Cockneys Vs. Zombies (2013)

A British Zombie Comedy

Cockneys vs. Zombies is one of the strangest zombie comedies ever made. In this movie, a zombie outbreak begins, and a group of East-Enders must fight their way through London. The main characters going into battle are a group of amateur bank robbers (the Cockneys of the тιтle) who race to save one of their grandfathers at a retirement home.

The best part is, when they get there, they hand out guns to the group of foul-mouthed pensioners, and then watch as they begin to gun down zombies. There are also great moments, including when a slow-moving zombie is chasing one of the older men using a walker.

Released eight years after Shaun of the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, it is clear that the movie owes a lot to Edgar Wright’s masterpiece. While nowhere near as good as Shaun of the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ, it has its charms and is quite funny and bloody at times. Critics mostly praised it, with a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, as the film delivers what it promises.

Anna And The Apocalypse (2017)

A Zombie Comedy Musical

Anna and the Apocalypse is not only a zombie comedy, but it is a musical zombie comedy. Released in 2017, Anna and the Apocalypse is also a British Christmas movie, making it a film that has something for everyone. The most impressive thing about the film is that it somehow works even with the busy genre-mashing.

Ella Hunt stars as Anna Shepherd, a high school senior in Scotland. While the film begins with her dealing with various high school problems, it then transitions into a zombie apocalypse movie, where Anna and her friends must fight off the monsters while waiting for help, singing songs, and learning life lessons along the way.

The film is a fun and lighthearted zombie comedy, perfect for anyone who loves zombies, Christmas movies, or musicals. The songs are also quite solid, making this one of the most unique zombie movies a fan could watch.

7

Warm Bodies (2013)

A Zombie Rom-Com

Warm Bodies is a zombie romantic comedy based on the book by Isaac Marion. The film stars Nicholas Hoult as R, a zombie who narrates his life in his head, which is what the audience mostly hears when he wanders around and tries not to give in and eat anyone. Things change when he meets a young woman named Julie (Teresa Palmer).

Julie’s dad is a zombie killer, which makes things challenging when she falls for R, and she and her new zombie boyfriend set out to find a cure that could save the rest of the zombies, or at least the ones who haven’t given in to their rage yet.

The movie was a box office success and received mostly positive reviews, with an 81% Rotten Tomatoes score. Described as a Romeo and Juliet story, but with a happy ending, Warm Bodies is one of the better zombie romantic comedies released this century.

The ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Don’t Die (2019)

Jim Jarmusch Takes On The Zombie Genre

Jim Jarmusch does not make any genre movie the way one might expect. He has taken to the horror genre more than once, and the films are never easy to categorize. His vampire movie, Only Lovers Left Alive, was an exploration of loneliness and existentialism between two ancient vampires. The ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Don’t Die is his zombie effort.

This movie stars Bill Murray and Adam Driver as two police officers who gradually come to realize that zombies are overrunning their town. They are surrounded by an eclectic cast that includes Tilda Swinton, Steve Buscemi, Danny Glover, Selena Gomez, Austin Butler, Rosie Perez, Iggy Pop, and more. The cast carries the film to great heights.

However, what makes the film stand out is when Adam Driver’s character breaks the fourth wall and informs Murray’s police chief that he knows what is going to happen because he read the script. After that, The ᴅᴇᴀᴅ Don’t Die veers completely off the rails and must be seen to be believed.

5

Return Of The Living ᴅᴇᴀᴅ (1985)

One Of The Earliest Zombie Comedies

Released in 1985, The Return of the Living ᴅᴇᴀᴅ is one of the first comedies that focuses on an actual zombie apocalypse. As the тιтle suggests, this is a direct spoof of George Romero’s Night of the Living ᴅᴇᴀᴅ franchise. The movie follows a small group of people as they deal with the unleashing of a virus that turns the town into a zombie-infested area.

This entire movie pokes fun at zombies, while not skimping on the gore and horror that zombie fans expect. For every hilarious moment, such as when a zombie gets on the police scanner and asks for them to “send more food,” there are scenes of intense gore and terrifying zombie action.

The film had a small but positive box office take. However, it became an instant cult classic, garnering high critical praise and a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The movie never once insults the genre; instead, it finds humor in a world full of zombies.

4

ParaNorman (2012)

An Animated Zombie Masterpiece

Anyone looking for a great zombie comedy that kids can watch should watch ParaNorman. This was Laika’s second film, following Coraline, which showed that they were a studio to reckon with. Using stop-motion animation, similar to most of the movies the studio produced, the story follows a young boy who can see and communicate with ᴅᴇᴀᴅ people.

When zombies rise and threaten his town, only Norman can communicate with them thanks to his unique abilities. Norman then must break a 300-year-old witch’s curse to save the world. The movie was a mᴀssive success upon its release, achieving box office success and earning an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Film.

Critics praised the film, awarding it an 89% rating, and it received praise for its handling of death and its impact on both Norman and his parents.

3

Fido (2006)

A Post-Zombie Apocalypse Movie

Fido is a Canadian zombie comedy set in a world where humanity has emerged victorious after the zombie apocalypse. With humans winning, they now live in peace, and a company has created collars that keep zombies docile and subservient to the living.

The film takes place in an idyllic town that is straight out of the 1950s, with Carrie-Anne Moss and Dylan Baker as a husband and wife whose son has a pet zombie named Fido (portrayed by Billy Connolly). However, when an accident shorts out Fido’s collar, he starts to kill, and the townspeople have to figure out what has happened.

Fido is one of the best zombie movies of the 21st century, regardless of whether it is a comedy or not. It is not only a funny zombie comedy, but also a powerful story about how corporations can hold a community hostage and then turn a blind eye when their actions lead to death and destruction.

2

Zombieland (2009)

One Of The Most Successful Zombie Comedies

One of the most successful zombie comedies arrived in 2009 with the Ruben Fleischer movie Zombieland. This film stars Jesse Eisenberg as a zombie apocalypse survivor who lives by a stringent set of rules until he meets another survivor, played by Woody Harrelson, who lives by the seat of his pants.

When they run across two sisters (Emma Stone and Abigail Breslin), it throws both their lives into turmoil. The zombie action here is great, and the comedy comes from the ridiculous ways that people die, with one of the best montages set to Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls.”

The movie was a box office success and spawned a sequel. However, it is the original that has remained a cult classic and one of the best zombie comedies of all time.

1

Shaun Of The ᴅᴇᴀᴅ (2004)

Edgar Wright’s Brilliant Zombie Satire

The best zombie comedy ever made came from the U.K., with Edgar Wright’s brilliant horror film, Shaun of the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ. This was the first part of Wright’s Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy, followed by H๏τ Fuzz and The World’s End. As with all three films in the series, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost star in the lead roles.

In this film, Pegg stars as Shaun, a man who sets out to save his girlfriend when the zombie apocalypse overtakes London. Frost stars as his slacker best friend Ed. The two then embark on an adventure with Shaun’s girlfriend, Liz, and two of her friends, as they attempt to save Shaun’s mom and head to the local pub to hide out.

Shaun of the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ has become one of the most beloved cult classics, celebrating its 20th anniversary, and is still regarded as one of the best zombie movies ever made. It was so respected that George Romero himself said he was a fan and invited both Wright and Pegg to cameo in his zombie movie, Land of the ᴅᴇᴀᴅ.
