The success of F1: The Movie is a game-changer for Apple Studios as their first true box office hit, and will undoubtedly encourage future gambles on the studio’s part as a new major player in Hollywood. While Apple has had no trouble attracting the top talent in Hollywood for its TV shows and movies, the success of F1: The Movie can only encourage them to dedicate even more resources to producing quality entertainment.
Our Take On F1: The Movie’s Domestic Total
The True Summer Blockbuster Is In Rarefied Air
The movie’s extended run is even more impressive considering that it isn’t based on an existing piece of IP. While the sport of Formula One Racing obviously has its own following, F1: The Movie is entirely original, and not based on any existing characters, books, comics, etc. In a day and age where the marquee is typically filled with sequels and superhero movies, an original movie grossing this well is rare.
By the end of its run, F1: The Movie should find its way into the top 40 most successful original movies of all time, slotting in above classics like The Hangover and The Matrix and just under epics like Twister and Saving Private Ryan. Ideally, that will encourage studios and filmmakers to continue taking chances on original movies.
