Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Doctor Aphra – Chaos Agent #2Star Wars may have just set up a new love-interest for Luke Skywalker. In the canon, Luke Skywalker seemingly lost out on having a romance after Leia was revealed to be his twin sister, combined with his path to becoming a Jedi Knight. However, Star Wars may be looking to echo Legends, with Luke potentially finding love during the New Republic Era.
Now rendered non-canonical Legends, the previous Star Wars continuity before Disney saw Luke Skywalker falling in love after the original trilogy. Surprisingly, Luke fell in love and eventually married Mara Jade, a former Imperial ᴀssᴀssin charged by Emperor Palpatine with killing Skywalker himself. Now, one of Star Wars’ newest (and canonical) comics has set the stage for a potential new romance.
Doctor Aphra Is Flirting With Luke Skywalker During The New Republic
Her Nickname For Luke Is More Important Than You Think
Having faced off with each other multiple times during the original trilogy before eventually becoming allies, Luke Skywalker and the rogue archaeologist Doctor Chelli Aphra have reunited once more in Marvel’s new Chaos Agent series. In the first two issues, Luke convinced the New Republic to recruit Aphra with the Department of Artifacts and Archival Goods Retrieval, and the duo worked together to uncover the origins of a powerful gauntlet.
Notably, Doctor Aphra continually calls Luke Skywalker “Farm Boy” in these two issues, chastising him for his apparent naivety while telling him that his idealism is what makes him so “charming” by the issue’s end.
Interestingly, “Farm Boy” is the same nickname Mara Jade had for Luke in Legends. Because Aphra is clearly flirting with Luke by the issue’s end before he leaves on a new mission, it’s worth suggesting that the stage has at least been set for a potential romance down the line (if that’s indeed the direction Star Wars wants to go down in the current canon).
Could Aphra Become A Subsтιтute For Mara Jade?
They’ve Got Some Fun Elements In Common
When looking at the full scope of Aphra’s Star Wars journey, it’s not hard to see how she could be a fitting subsтιтute for Mara Jade in the official canon. Both were morally complex, and they both started with key Imperial ties (Aphra made her debut as an agent for Darth Vader).
Likewise, Aphra and Mara both evolved as allies and friends to the heroes of the Rebellion, specifically Luke Skywalker. Doctor Aphra has also become a major fan-favorite, just like Mara Jade. Keeping all that in mind, I wouldn’t be surprised if Aphra and Luke have a legitimate romantic fling in future New Republic issues, even if it doesn’t go as far as Luke and Mara Jade in Legends.

An archaeologist who trained at the University of Bar’leth, Doctor Aphra has always tended to put her own interests first. She’s particularly interested in retrieving valuable relics related to ancient (and forbidden) Force traditions, and this has often brought her to the attention of Darth Vader and even Palpatine himself. Aphra is an unlikely ally for the Rebel Alliance, but she’s clearly on a path of redemption, one that could potentially lead to uncovering ancient Jedi secrets.

Hailing from the Legends continuity, Mara Jade’s Force-sensitivity caught the eye of Emperor Palpatine himself. She became one of the Emperor’s Hands, a skilled ᴀssᴀssin and spy who served his will. Mara failed in her last mission for the Emperor, to kill Luke Skywalker, and sank into the depths of the underworld for a time. She eventually became an ally of Luke, and the two fell in love, with Mara joining Luke’s Jedi Order. Mara was eventually killed by Jacen Solo, serving as his sacrifice as he committed himself to the way of the Sith.
