James Gunn’s Superman Settles The Debate About Whether 1 Batman Costume Detail Can Work In The DCU

James Gunn’s Superman proves the DCU’s Batman can finally have one iconic part of his costume in The Brave and the Bold and beyond. Following Superman‘s release, anticipation for several heroes’ DCU introduction skyrocketed. Milly Alcock’s Kara Zor-El is next in Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl, and both the DCU’s Wonder Woman and Batman may not be far behind.

Translating the Batsuit to live-action is always a key part of Batman’s adaptations. There have been many more varied Batsuits in the comics than on the big screen, but James Gunn’s DCU might push the envelope compared to all previous movie costumes. One detail in particular could finally make the jump from the comic book pages to the film format.

Superman’s Mister Terrific Proves Batman’s White Eye Lenses Can Work In The DCU

Mister Terrific’s White Lenses Are Both Believable And Convenient

Just like the discussion around whether Superman’s trunks could work in the DCU, there’s a divided stance on whether the DCU’s Batman’s cowl should have white lenses. The biggest argument against Batman’s white eyes is that they could conceal the subtleties in the actor’s performance. However, this might only be a problem in adaptations where Batman’s lenses are fully grounded in reality.

In this universe, Batman must have a wider variety of gadgets than every previous live-action Batman portrayal so far

In Superman, Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific activates his nanotech mask’s high-tech white lenses to analyze Lex Luthor’s pocket universe technology. Once he’s done, Mister Terrific deactivates them and continues to emote with his natural eyes. The Brave and the Bold could do something similar with Batman, who must possess similarly advanced technology.

Mister Terrific’s state-of-the-art white eye lenses are the least fantastical element in James Gunn’s Superman. Superman casually introduces concepts like pocket dimensions, remote-controlled Superman clones, genetically-modified creatures of all kinds, and matter-transmutating metahumans. In this universe, Batman must have a wider variety of gadgets than every previous live-action Batman portrayal so far.

Batman's eyes are completely white as he activates his suit's sonar technology

In Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, Batman uses a set of white lenses on his cowl. This is only a temporary addition to his gear in a mission where he needs to detect enemies through walls. However, Batman’s bulky white lenses from The Dark Knight could serve as the basis for the DCU’s modern interpretation of Batman’s iconic comic book mask.

In the DCEU, Ben Affleck’s Batman sports shining white lenses in his Superman-buster suit of armor.

Two decades later, VFX technology has evolved to the point where Batman could easily sport white lenses on and off, like Superman‘s Mister Terrific. They could serve a similar purpose to The Dark Knight‘s, but they would be much more advanced. Likewise, costume details like a highly resistant cloth fabric could be adapted to live-action as well.
