The Summer Movie We Gave A 9/10 Rave Review For Is Now Available At Home

One of the summer’s buzziest movies is now officially available at home. Since the summer movie season got underway in May, theaters across the country have been booming thanks to a variety of тιтles. Though some expected hits ended up faltering, like the John Wick spinoff Ballerina and Blumhouse’s M3GAN 2.0, there has been plenty to celebrate.

Box office-wise, live-action remakes Lilo & Sтιтch and How to Train Your Dragon have pulled in the family-friendly demographic, while reliable properties like Jurᴀssic World and Superman have demonstrated their staying power. Even more impressively, many of these movies are well-liked by audiences and critics alike.

Jurᴀssic World Rebirth might not be particularly acclaimed, but тιтles like Superman and F1: The Movie have posted some of the best critical scores for blockbusters this year. Now, one of ScreenRant‘s own 2025 favorites, the recipient of a glowing 9 out of 10-star review, is available at home.

Materialists Is Now Available On Digital

And Here’s Why You Should Check It Out

Celine Song’s romantic drama Materialists is now available to rent or own. Fresh off her Oscar-nominated hit Past Lives, Song wrote and directed A24’s starry movie about a New York City matchmaker (Dakota Johnson) who finds herself questioning what she wants in a relationship when she gets caught between a dreamy billionaire (Pedro Pascal) and her broke ex (Chris Evans).

Materialists caused a surprising amount of controversy when it was released in June, largely because A24 sold the film as a rom-com when it’s actually a far weightier examination of modern romance. It drew generally positive reviews from critics, earning a 79% on Rotten Tomatoes, while viewers were more torn, giving it a 67%.

For her part, ScreenRant‘s Molly Freeman raved about Materialists in her review, writing, “It’s a beautiful escape that left me yearning for more — both from the movie and from life in general.” Indeed, there’s much to admire about this movie, especially if you go in understanding it isn’t a romantic comedy.

Though the ending is somewhat controversial, and Song includes some potentially triggering plotlines, the movie is worth watching. In an age where the box office is dominated by remakes and franchises, Materialists is a strong reminder of how effective a mid-budget, star-driven drama can be.

To date, Materialists has earned $50.4 million worldwide on a $20 million budget.

Johnson, Evans, and Pascal all give strong performances, and their characters raise some interesting discussions about what people are willing to do for love today, and what makes a good match. As Freeman put it, “All three stars are absolutely flawless, and if I had any complaint, it’s that I wanted them to interact more.”

It’s also very clear that Song made the movie she wanted to, and that she channeled some poignant, personal themes into her story. It’s the kind of film that you can take your time with and really sink into. Yes, the marketing was very misleading, and anyone who expected a classic rom-com was bound to be caught off-guard.

However, now that the discourse has calmed down and Materialists is at home, viewers who missed its theatrical run can give it a watch and decide how they feel for themselves. It’s the ideal summer watch for both hopeless romantics and cynics, and for those who miss the auteur-driven romantic dramas of years past.
