Rewatching Tom Holland’s First Spider-Man Movie Proves How Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s Latest Update Is Perfect For The MCU Movie

After several rumors, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now confirmed to be the type of movie many wanted for the continuation of one of the most popular franchises in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Spider-Man: No Way Home stands as the highest-grossing entry among the MCU’s Spider-Man movies and all films that focus on Peter Parker in live-action and animation.

It is easily one of the best MCU movies and entries in the Multiverse Saga, making the most of the multiverse by bringing in Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men, as well as villains from their solo movies. Due to the film’s success, debates started about whether Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s story should use the multiverse and the heroes again.

Conflicting reports emerged over the past few years, with little actually revealed about the next Spider-Man movie. Everything from the Spider-Men’s return to symbiotes to the Hulk as a villain and more was rumored for the film. Now, a major MCU update cements that the highly-anticipated Marvel movie is going back to the character’s roots, which No Way Home set up.

Spider-Man: Homecoming Was The Perfect Street-Level Start To The MCU Franchise

The MCU’s Peter Parker Was Not Yet A Veteran Hero

Tom Holland first played Peter Parker in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War. While his role was exciting, allowing the MCU to finally use Spider-Man and fans to see him interacting with heroes like Captain America and Iron Man, the hero did not get as much focus as a solo movie would allow. A year later, Holland’s Peter would get to shine.

2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming was a pitch-perfect first step for the MCU’s Spider-Man franchise. With Michael Keaton as the Vulture, the film went for a street-level approach that stayed true to the character’s roots while inserting him into the larger MCU at the same time. Dealing with high school, protecting his idenтιтy, and stopping a gang made for a classic Spidey story.

The MCU started with a firmly street-level Spidey.

Homecoming made sure to tell the audience that Holland’s Peter Parker was the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man multiple times. The most blatant way the film hit that point home was when Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man tried to recruit him for the Avengers, but Spider-Man refused, claiming he had to protect his neighborhood. The MCU started with a firmly street-level Spidey.

Kevin Feige Has Confirmed That Spider-Man: Brand New Day Is Going Back To The Hero’s Roots

The MCU’s Spider-Man Will Have A Street-Level Adventure Next

After Spider-Man: Homecoming, Tom Holland’s MCU journey as Peter Parker would see him constantly move away from his street-level roots. Spider-Man: Far From Home was a globe-trotting adventure that had the hero fight crime all over Europe. Before that, Spider-Man appeared in two Avengers movies — Infinity War and Endgame — which had end-of-the-world stakes. Spider-Man: No Way Home was a multiverse event.

With each appearance after Spider-Man: Homecoming, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man has moved further away from his street-level roots. However, his next film will change that. Recently, during a roundtable with journalists, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will see the hero “being a proper Spider-Man” for the first time, fighting “street-level crime,” which I find exciting.

Feige also confirmed the reports that Jon Bernthal’s Punisher would appear in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. With Spider-Man and the Punisher teaming up to take on street-level villains in the MCU’s next Spider-Man movie, the multiverse route is firmly out the window. After rewatching Spider-Man: Homecoming and seeing how it perfectly encapsulates why Spider-Man works, the new update sounds great.

Why A Street-Level Spider-Man Movie Is The Perfect No Way Home Follow-Up

The MCU Has Already Set Up A Darker Future For The Hero

While I would never turn down the opportunity of seeing Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Men reunite on the big screen, I’m glad Spider-Man: Brand New Day is going in the street-level direction. That is because Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s ending perfectly set up that storyline, so taking Peter on another multiverse adventure after it would feel like a waste.

At the end of the MCU’s latest Spider-Man movie, Doctor Strange’s spell saved Earth but made the world forget who Tom Holland’s Peter Parker was. With Aunt May ᴅᴇᴀᴅ and nobody remembering him, Peter is now living alone in a small apartment with little money and no access to Stark Tech. Marvel Studios has stripped Spider-Man back to basics.

We saw Peter crafting his new Spider-Man suit by hand, so a street-level fourth movie for the hero makes more sense than a sprawling multiverse adventure. Holland’s Peter Parker is in a dark phase in his life, and pairing him up with someone like the Punisher is perfect. Frank Castle’s tragic backstory can lead to them bonding over their trauma.

Spider-Man Can Get Involved In Multiverse Storylines Elsewhere Soon

The MCU’s Multiverse Saga Will Release Its Biggest Events In The Next Couple Of Years

Loki Season 2's Sacred Timeline in the shape of a Multiversal Yggdrasil

A street-level Spider-Man movie was the best-case scenario post-Spider-Man: No Way Home. After that, Holland’s Spider-Man could always get involved in new multiverse storylines in the MCU. After all, the Multiverse Saga will only end after 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars. Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be released before both of the upcoming Avengers movies, so he is free to join them.

With the Avengers movies’ delay, Avengers: Doomsday being released after Spider-Man: Brand New Day allows the MCU to follow up on No Way Home‘s street-level setup and then free the character for the Multiverse Saga’s upcoming events. After No Way Home nearly made $2 billion worldwide (via Box Office Mojo), Marvel must want to bring back Maguire and Garfield’s Spider-Men.

The next Avengers movie will release only five months after Spider-Man: Brand New Day. While Holland’s Spider-Man was not announced as part of Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast, Kevin Feige has teased that more characters have yet to be revealed. As such, Marvel could focus on a street-level Spider-Man movie and then have him on a multiverse adventure in the same year.
