James Gunn Addresses Whether Lex Luthor Will Ever Don His Warsuit In The DCU After That Superman Easter Egg

James Gunn has outlined whether the DCU’s Lex Luthor will ever wear his iconic warsuit, following a Superman Easter egg. Superman‘s Easter eggs were aplenty, teasing wider DCU characters and locations. Others, however, hinted at the future of Superman‘s villains, Lex Luthor being chief among them.

In a recent appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, Superman writer-director James Gunn was asked about Lex Luthor’s armored suit from DC Comics. Gunn was specifically asked whether any version of Superman‘s script had Lex donning the green and purple armor, to which he simply replied, “No.”

Shortly before this, though, Gunn vaguely pointed to a few elements of Superman that indicate this could be in Lex’s future:

“We still got plenty of time, man. We see the early prototypes of that suit.”

Gunn is likely referencing Lex Luthor’s armored Raptor suits from Superman, as well as the mechanical Hammer of Boravia armor created by LuthorCorp. Gunn’s reference to these Easter eggs implies that the DCU’s future will incorporate Lex’s armor, especially after his comment in the podcast that Hoult’s Luthor is important to the future of both Superman and the wider franchise.

What James Gunn’s Lex Luthor Comments Mean

The Future Of Lex Is Already In The Works

In terms of what Gunn’s comments mean, the answer is fairly self-explanatory. Gunn’s hints at the armored soldiers Luthor created in this movie indicate that they were intentionally woven into Superman‘s script to tease the villain’s future plans. Gunn also indicated how important Luthor will continue to be after Superman’s ending, reinforcing this.

Clearly, Gunn had ideas for where he wanted the rivalry between Lex and Superman to go. The iconic armored suit may be one destination, allowing Lex to be a physical adversary to Superman as well as an intellectual one. After Gunn’s reference to the other armor included in Superman, it seems this roadmap for Lex has begun being paved.

Our Take On James Gunn’s Lex Luthor Comments

If Superman achieved anything for me personally, it made me even more excited about the future of the DCU than I already was. Gunn’s comments only further that by teasing a way forward, one that aligns with DC Comics yet also makes sense within the framework of the DC Universe itself. Superman clearly sets up the future in many ways, and Gunn is overly aware of this.

The fact that Gunn included these elements as a way to tease Lex’s future proves that DC films finally have what they have been lacking for over a decade: a clear creative direction. Aspects are being teased that already have payoffs in mind, rather than throwing things at a wall to see what sticks. Superman proves this, as do Gunn’s Lex Luthor comments.
