I Know What You Did Last Summer’s director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson discussed the major cameo in the mid-credits scene and explained how it could potentially set up a sequel. While Jennifer Love Hewitt’s Julie and Freddie Prinze Jr.’s Ray were the main characters from the original movies to return in the legacy sequel, Brandy Norwood also appears as Karla in the mid-credits scene.
Even though reviews for I Know What You Did Last Summer have been quite disappointing, many fans were delighted to see Karla appear at the end of the film. Brandy previously played Julie’s roommate and best friend in the sequel to the original film, 1998’s I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.
In an interview with Screen Rant’s own Ash Crossan, Robinson talked about how excited she was to include Karla in I Know What You Did Last Summer and explained the dynamic between Julie and her college roommate. Additionally, she teased that she has an idea for a sequel following Karla’s cameo at the end of the film. Read her full comments below:
I do have a plan in mind of what could be next. I cannot tell you. [Laughs]
I wanted Brandy in this film. And again, a lot of the cameos, a lot of the choices made—they just had to be the right thing. Not just for the character and for the franchise, but for this version of the movie and the story that we were telling.
So for me, to catch up with Brandy where we find her in the film, and to know that Julie James is a character who has shut everybody out—she left Southport, she abandoned Ray, she doesn’t really have any friends, she lives by herself—that person wouldn’t necessarily have kept up with anyone.
So bringing them back together was really fun, and I loved being able to do that.
What These Comments About Karla’s Cameo Mean For I Know What You Did Last Summer
Karla Could Return In The Next Movie
In the new I Know What You Did Last Summer movie, it is established that Julie and Ray, the two primary characters in the original films, are now divorced. Years after being attacked by the Fisherman in the franchise’s first two movies, it is clear that Julie doesn’t really trust anyone and chooses to spend her life completely alone. Therefore, it makes sense that she and Karla have lost touch.

However, the ending of I Know What You Did Last Summer shockingly reveals that Ray was one of the killers. The movie’s other killer, Stevie, is also still alive somewhere. Since Julie is still getting mysterious notes, either from Stevie or someone else, she reunites with Karla in the movie’s mid-credits scene.
During this scene, Karla immediately agrees to help Julie, which perfectly sets up another entry in the horror franchise. Robinson clearly doesn’t want to reveal any details about her idea for a sequel, but it would seemingly revolve around Julie and Karla. Perhaps they would lead the movie alongside Chase Sui Wonders’ Ava and Madelyn Cline’s Danica, two survivors from the new film.
Our Take On These Comments About Karla’s Cameo In I Know What You Did Last Summer
Karla Was A Great Addition To The New Movie
I Know What You Did Last Summer’s killer twist has proven to be very divisive, especially since Ray was such a beloved character. Ray being one of the killers may be upsetting fans, but the new movie tries its best to honor other characters from the original films. Karla’s cameo and even Helen Shivers’ appearance in a dream sequence are perfect examples of this.
Even though the film makes some controversial story decisions, there is still reason to be excited about a potential sequel. If Julie and Karla do lead the cast of the franchise’s next movie, fans of the previous films would likely be thrilled. Therefore, I hope Julie and Karla return once again after seeing the mid-credits scene for I Know What You Did Last Summer.
