While Waiting For Kevin Costner’s Western Sequel, There’s At Least This Thriller To Look Forward To

A long-time actor and director, Kevin Costner had a dream project that he has been working on for years. This was the Horizon series, a group of modern Western films that would tackle the expansion of the American West. As per his plan, Costner would direct and star in these movies.

Before Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 was even released, Chapter 2 was on the release calendar. Costner was even talking about plans for Horizon 3 and beyond.

These plans got squashed, however, when the first part of Horizon was a box office bomb. The film made only $38.8 million worldwide, which is not nearly enough given the film’s estimated $100 million budget. This led the second film to be stripped from the release calendar.

Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 did screen for critics at the Venice Film Festival in 2024, and so currently holds a 54% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Now, the future of the Horizon franchise hangs in the balance. The first movie has done well on streaming despite the lackluster box office, but the second film still has no scheduled release.

Despite sinking a lot of resources into Horizon, Costner has not put his career on hold just because of its failure. Rather, the actor is working on something else that will be an exciting upcoming project.

Kevin Costner’s Only Upcoming Non-Horizon Movie Is An Exciting Thriller

This Will Give Costner A Big Role

Costner is set to star in the film Headhunters. Described as an adventure thriller, the movie will tell the story of an expat named Lazer who leads a group of surfers to a spot on a mysterious island that supposedly has the perfect waves. While there, though, a group of headhunters wants to guard their land, leading to conflict.

Costner plays the lead role of Lazer, with a supporting cast including Chloe East, Daniel Zovatto, Sam Corlett, and Evan Mock. The film is directed by Steven Holleran and co-written by him and Costner. The film is expected for release next year, in 2026, but a specific date has not yet been revealed.

Headhunters will give Costner a very different type of role from what he has been used to. Between Yellowstone and Horizon, the actor has spent the last few years doing primarily Westerns. Stepping into the thriller genre, Costner will get an opportunity to show off more of his range with Headhunters.

Will Costner Ever Get To Finish His Horizon Saga?

The Odds Are Not Looking Great

Costner’s work on Headhunters will take him away from delving into his Horizon saga. With Horizon: An America Saga – Chapter 2 still undated and the production facing legal issues, the future is not looking very positive for the Western movies. Costner may be very determined to make them happen, but there needs to be a significant push for his dreams to come to fruition.
