Kevin Feige Gives Production Update On Mahershala Ali’s Blade Movie

Kevin Feige explains why the MCU’s Blade reboot has taken so long and what Marvel Studios is looking for in the movie. Marvel’s Blade was first announced at San Diego Comic Con 2019, but it has taken much longer to take shape than тιтles like Captain America: Brave New World, Thunderbolts*, and even Avengers: Doomsday and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Six years after it was first announced, Marvel’s Blade remains in development, with no full cast or script confirmed.

As reported by ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Kevin Feige revealed there have been four different versions of Marvel’s Blade: two of them set in the past, and two of them set in the present day. Feige confirmed the current Blade script takes place in the modern day and explained that Marvel doesn’t want a straightforward action movie that only focuses on Mahershala Ali’s Blade killing vampires. Read Feige’s comments on Blade:

“We didn’t want to put a leather outfit on him and have him start killing vampires. You can start and have a good script and make it a great script through production, but we didn’t feel confident we could do that on Blade. We didn’t want to do that to Mahershala and didn’t want to do that to us.”

What Kevin Feige’s Blade Comments Mean For The MCU

Marvel Seems To Be Making Sure The MCU’s Blade Is Drastically Different From New Line’s

By this point, Blade‘s many delays have taken center stage in the discussion around Marvel’s reboot. Marvel’s struggle to find its perfect Blade script stands out even more considering the Wesley Snipes-led Blade movies of the early two thousands were mᴀssively popular more than twenty years before. Back in the day, Blade’s nonchalant battles against vampire hordes were enough to make the Daywalker a Marvel movie icon.

Now, Kevin Feige’s comments confirm that Marvel Studios is putting special emphasis on its Blade reboot’s innovative qualities. Instead of a simple action movie starring a vampire hunter, Blade is gearing up to be a groundbreaking installment that positions Mahershala Ali’s Eric Brooks as a key MCU figure. Which extraordinary qualities Blade will offer in order to stand apart from the Blade trilogy remain to be revealed.

Our Take On Kevin Feige’s Blade Comments

Marvel’s Scrapped Blade Ideas Provide More Questions Than Answers

Marvel Studios’ insistence on having the Blade reboot take place in the past is an intriguing idea. Eternals‘ post-credits scene suggests Mahershala Ali’s Eric Brooks is well acquainted with mystical threats beyond vampirism, meaning that he may have started his superhero career over a century before the MCU’s present day. Even if Marvel Studios settles on Blade‘s modern-day setting, this aspect of the MCU’s Eric Brooks will likely remain.

Blade will likely take place in the modern day with some hints or flashbacks to Eric Brooks’ origins. Still, the reboot may have to prove exactly why Mahershala Ali’s first MCU Blade movie can’t be a straightforward vampire-hunting story. Similarities with Wesley Snipes’ portrayal, creative differences with each director, and Blade‘s place in the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe can all be contributing factors to this defining characteristic.
