I Can’t Believe How Easy James Gunn Made It To Replace The DCEU Justice League’s Canon-Breaking DCU Cameo

There’s one Justice League detail that still messes up the DCU‘s continuity, but James Gunn has already teased the perfect solution. While several DCEU actors are returning in the DCU, James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe is officially a brand-new continuity. Only a couple of Justice League heroes are known to exist in the DCU at this point. In fact, none of them may have met each other yet.

John Cena’s Chris Smith is one of the DCEU characters who survived the DCU reboot. Cena’s Peacemaker makes a cameo in Superman only a few months before the second season of his own show. Peacemaker season 2 is expected to gel well with its first season, which originally took place in the DCEU. However, one simple gag would break Peacemaker‘s canon, but only if James Gunn missed the perfect chance to fix it.

The Justice League’s Peacemaker Season 2 Cameo Now Sticks Out Like A Sore Thumb

The Justice League’s Late Arrival Is Difficult To Ignore

Throughout season 1, Peacemaker and other characters repeatedly reference other DC characters, from famous icons like Batman and Green Arrow to more obscure figures like Bat-Mite and Kite Man. However, which version of these characters was being addressed was ambiguous until the very end. In the Peacemaker season 1 finale, the DCEU Justice League arrive late to help Peacemaker stop the ʙuттerfly invasion, thus confirming the show took place in the same continuity as Justice League.

James Gunn’s DCU reboot is set to bring the events of Peacemaker season 1 into the same continuity as season 2. But as easy as it is to recontextualize the first season in the DCU, the Justice League’s Peacemaker cameo is now extremely difficult to ignore. Even Jason Momoa and Ezra Miller reprised their roles as Aquaman and the Flash, respectively, complete with their Justice League and Aquaman costumes.

Peacemaker Season 2 Could Easily Replace The Justice League With The Justice Gang

Superman & Peacemaker Season 2 Establish A Careless Superhero Team

Justice Gang Interviewing Peacemaker

Peacemaker season 2’s first trailer opens with Chris Smith’s interview with Maxwell Lord and the Justice Gang. This team cares so little about Chris’ superhero career that they forget to mute their microphones while trash-talking him. To smooth out the first and second season’s DCU canon, Peacemaker or another character could acknowledge that it was the Justice Gang who arrived late to intervene in the ʙuттerfly invasion, not the Justice League.

The Justice Gang’s failure to stop the ʙuттerfly invasion makes even more sense. While Peacemaker pokes fun at traditional superheroes, it’s still rather out-of-character for heroes like Superman and Wonder Woman to miss such a dangerous threat. Meanwhile, Superman reveals just how cocky and self-absorbed the Justice Gang is. Just like they disregard potential collateral damage from a kaiju destroying Metropolis, they could arrive late to an alien invasion.
