This Underrated Horror Movie From 2009 Is Now A Streaming Hit On HBO Max

Fans are finally discovering an underrated horror movie from 2009, as it has become a streaming hit on HBO Max, 16 years after its initial release. While the merits of streaming services remain a debatable topic of discussion, there is no doubt that they offer a unique opportunity for older movies that fans may have missed the first time around.

When it comes to streaming services like HBO Max, the approach is a bit different because it is a service owned by a studio that prioritizes its own releases above almost all others when adding тιтles to the platform. However, this specific horror movie is a Universal Pictures release, which makes its success on HBO Max more impressive.

The Last House On The Left Is Now In HBO Max’s Top 10 Movies

The Remake Of Wes Craven’s Classic Is A Streaming Hit

The Last House on the Left has entered the top 10 most-watched movies on HBO Max. Released in 2009 by director Dennis Iliadis, the horror movie is a remake of a Wes Craven film that itself was a remake of Ingmar Bergman’s brilliant Swedish rape-and-revenge film, The Virgin Spring.

The 2009 release stars Garret Dillahunt (Fear the Walking ᴅᴇᴀᴅ) as a vicious serial killer named Krug whose brother, Francis (Aaron Paul), helps him escape from police custody, and they go on the run after murdering some police officers. They soon meet up with Krug’s son Justin (Spencer Treat Clark) at a motel, where they murder a girl Justin was partying with and rape the other.

This leads the group to find refuge from a storm in a family’s vacation house, not realizing this is the family of the girl they raped. The movie then turns into a revenge thriller, with the family exacting bloody and brutal vengeance against the killers. Critics awarded it a 42% RT score, and it was a modest box office success, but has since been largely forgotten.

Why You Should Watch The Last House On The Left

The Movie Offers A Different Experience From The Original

Garret Dillahunt as Krug in The Last House on the Left

For anyone who hasn’t seen it, the 2009 version of The Last House On The Left is a very different experience from the 1970s Wes Craven version. For one thing, the daughter does not die in the remake, which gives it a different feeling from the original and the superior Swedish version, The Virgin Spring.

There is one other thing to note, as this is also during the era of the “torture porn” genre, and there is a lot of hardcore gore, including the climax, that might be a little hard for people with weak stomachs to take. However, for horror fans, the remake of The Last House on the Left deserves another look, and it is now trending on HBO Max.
