Two $1.3 Billion MCU Movies Make Avengers: Doomsday’s Box Office Challenge Even Trickier

Avengers: Doomsday has a big challenge ahead, considering some of the MCU’s other box office achievements. Being based on the beloved Marvel Comics gave the MCU a leg up when it first premiered, but no one could’ve ever guessed that the franchise would achieve the blockbuster status that it has.

Out of the 36 MCU films that have been released since 2008, 11 projects have crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. It’s a huge feat for any movie to achieve such success, let alone for a studio to do so repeatedly. However, one box office trend makes it trickier for Avengers: Doomsday to have the impact Marvel desires.

Avengers: Doomsday Has A Major Series History To Live Up To

Every Avengers Film Has Made $1 Billion Worldwide

It’s no surprise that all four Avengers films made $1 billion globally, and the films all landed in the top five highest-grossing MCU films of all time. Age of Ultron made $1.3 billion, and the original Avengers film made $1.5 billion. Infinity War came in at $2 billion, and Endgame made a whopping $2.7 billion.

Although $1 billion is an extraordinary number, it’s become an attainable goal for the MCU. Fans have been particularly critical of the Multiverse Saga, and the expectations for Avengers: Doomsday are high. The film will undoubtedly be expected to follow in the footsteps of the previous Avengers films by making $1 billion upon its release.

Black Panther And ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine Make Doomsday’s Challenge Harder

The Two Films Came Close To Overtaking Age Of Ultron

Considering how meaningful the Avengers films are for the MCU, it makes sense that they are films that could easily make $1 billion. They are major crossover events that even casual fans feel inclined to tune in to. However, some other standout MCU projects have also reached this impressive feat.

Spider-Man: No Way Home remains the only MCU film to make more than an Avengers film to this day, making $1.9 billion globally. Black Panther and ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine came very close, with both films only making slightly less than Avengers: Age of Ultron. These box office numbers show just how much smaller the margin of success is to make history than it was before.

The $1 billion mark at the box office isn’t reserved for Avengers films anymore, nor was it ever a guarantee. Even if Avengers: Doomsday does manage to make $1 billion, it may not even be enough. It could easily fall below the other highest-grossing MCU films, and there’s always the chance that it’s the first Avengers film not to debut at the top.

Avengers: Doomsday’s Setup Bodes Well For It Living Up To Its Predecessors

The MCU Is Currently In A Great Place

The Fantastic Four First Steps cast suited up

Although the MCU has had its rough patches during the Multiverse Saga, the franchise is currently on a good streak. Thunderbolts* received praise for being one of the strongest MCU films in recent years, and the early Fantastic Four: First Steps reviews have been largely positive. These two specific projects are key in setting up Doomsday.

The implications of Thunderbolts* and Fantastic Four mean that the fan intrigue for Doomsday has been higher than ever. Even with the Multiverse Saga critiques, casual fans are more inclined to see Avengers: Doomsday over any other project, and perhaps it’s 2027’s Secret Wars that has to worry about as part two.

From the cast alone, Avengers: Doomsday promises to be the biggest Avengers movie that Marvel has made yet. Although it’ll be harder for it to impress even if it makes $1 billion at the global box office, the current MCU setup bodes well for its success.
