Scarlett Johansson has, arguably, the most significant box office potential of any actor working today. As per The Numbers, she is ranked No. 1 among the highest-grossing actors of all time. Her Lead Ensemble Member actress credits, which total 18 films, have made her a whopping $12.9 billion, and her Lead Actor credits tack on another $2 billion.
A huge part of Johansson’s career has been her role as the Avenger Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). These films made a considerable profit, with Avengers: Endgame being among the highest-grossing movies of all time. Johansson’s involvement with the MCU contributed a substantial amount to her box office total.
Sadly for Johansson, her MCU days are most likely over. The franchise has confirmed her character’s death in the most recent entry, Thunderbolts*, making it unlikely for her to come back.
Now, Johansson has forged ahead on roles outside of the MCU. This has included films like Fly Me to the Moon and The Phoenician Scheme. Most recently, the actor was in Jurᴀssic World: Rebirth. Though it got mixed reviews, this might just be a perfect opportunity for Johansson.
Jurᴀssic Can Now Be Scarlett Johansson’s MCU Replacement
Rebirth Will Almost ᴀssuredly Get Sequels
Jurᴀssic Park was already incredibly famous, but the Jurᴀssic World franchise has been even more wildly successful. Rebirth is no exception. At the time of writing, this latest installment has grossed over $544 million worldwide, a total that is still growing as the movie continues its theatrical reign.
Based on this box office, the movie will likely get sequels. In the first movie, Johansson’s Zora was positioned as the main character. Given that she survives the harrowing events of Rebirth, the character will be expected to return for any future Jurᴀssic movies.
This will give Johansson another major franchise in her career. She has not had a big series since ending her MCU tenure, but she can get that with Jurᴀssic World, and it is a franchise with particularly high growth potential.
The MCU Took Too Long Giving Johansson Her Own Movie
But Jurᴀssic Can Fix That
Jurᴀssic World: Rebirth is also on the path to fixing a major mistake that Marvel made when it came to including Johansson in the MCU. Though she was in many Avengers movies, she did not get her solo movie, Black Widow, until 2021. This was a prequel, but release-wise came after her character’s Endgame death, making it far too late.
If she had gotten the chance earlier, Johansson could have led more than one MCU movie. She will never get that kind of runway for Black Widow, but luckily, she should be able to lead in multiple franchise films with the Jurᴀssic movies.
