As Jurᴀssic World Rebirth continues to stomp through the box office, it just pᴀssed another monster epic. Rebirth has earned some positive reviews, with ScreenRant‘s Mary Kᴀssel calling it the franchise’s “most meaningful movie in years,“ while praising the performances from Jonathan Bailey (Dr. Henry Loomis), Mahershala Ali (Duncan Kincaid), and Scarlett Johansson (Zora Bennett).
According to a report by Variety, Rebirth took the #2 spot at the box office this weekend, earning $23 million domestically after a 43% drop. With that total, it has earned $276 million domestically and $647 million globally. It is only in its third week at the box office and has been facing off against strong compeтιтion.
This total does help Rebirth defeat another major compeтιтor, as it has officially earned more than Peter Jackson’s own monster movie. Rebirth beat King Kong (2005), which ushered in just $218 million domestically and $557 million worldwide in its lifetime. Rebirth has earned nearly $100 million more, despite failing to live up to previous Jurᴀssic World releases.
What This Means For Jurᴀssic World Rebirth
King Kong Can’t Stand Up To Dinosaurs
This is undoubtedly an impressive accomplishment, especially at the modern box office. Only three other movies (Ne Zha 2, Lilo & Sтιтch, and A Minecraft Movie) have earned over $600 million this year, and only two of them came from Hollywood. Any film earning this much at the recent box office is excellent news.
Unfortunately, the movie is still struggling to live up to previous franchise releases. Despite grossing $1 billion or more for each release worldwide, the average gross for the Jurᴀssic World franchise is decreasing with every new release. None of the films has ever earned more than its predecessor, which is a worrying sign:

Even when compared to King Kong, Rebirth is still somewhat struggling. When adjusting for inflation, King Kong earned around $942 million globally, which Rebirth will not come close to matching. Though there is still time to improve at the box office, it is about to face even stronger compeтιтion in week 4.
Our Take On Jurᴀssic World’s Success
This Has Been A Strong Run
This has undoubtedly been a strong run, especially when considering the other recent releases at the box office. Superman has been dominant since its release, blowing the dinosaurs out of the water. Next week should also see the release of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which should provide additional compeтιтion.
With so many factors working against it, this performance has been impressive, and Universal should be proud of its newest release. While the theatrical landscape has changed considerably since the pandemic, the love for dinosaur movies has never faded, and Jurᴀssic World Rebirth is proof.
