Lilo & Sтιтch Is Only $23 Million Away From Beating Tim Burton On All-Time Box Office List

Lilo & Sтιтch is an enormous hit for Disney, and the movie’s box office now looks set to overtake a major Tim Burton picture. Releasing in May of this year, the latest Disney live-action remake has connected with audiences worldwide, allowing it to become one of the biggest remakes that the studio has yet produced.

This became more significant earlier this week, when Lilo & Sтιтch pᴀssed the $1 billion milestone. The movie is the first Hollywood release to do so this year, after A Minecraft Movie came very close, with $955 million worldwide. With this sum, Lilo & Sтιтch has joined a very exclusive club alongside other remakes, including Aladdin and The Lion King.

Still, the box office run for Lilo & Sтιтch is not over yet. Lilo & Sтιтch is not yet streaming, although the film will be released for purchase on digital HD later this week. Yet there is still room for it to reap further returns, and the remake is now closing in on a Burton film from 2010.

Lilo & Sтιтch Could Become Disney’s 4th Biggest Live-Action Remake

Alice In Wonderland Is Standing In Its Way

Lilo & Sтιтch is currently the fifth-highest-grossing live-action remake from Disney, but it is only $23 million from overtaking Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. The 2010 Alice in Wonderland remake remains Burton’s biggest hit, and it allowed the highly visual filmmaker to put a dark twist on the seminal Lewis Carroll novel that felt perfect for its time.

Alice in Wonderland was not universally beloved, but it made an incredible amount of money. The film, which came only a few months after the cultural event of Avatar, used 3D as a selling point. Combine that with a classic story, given a twisted update with Johnny Depp at the top of his powers, and audiences came out in droves.

Disney Remake

Worldwide Box Office Total

The Lion King (2019)

$1,662,020,819

Beauty and the Beast (2017)

$1,263,521,126

Aladdin (2019)

$1,050,693,953

Alice in Wonderland (2010)

$1,025,467,110

Lilo & Sтιтch (2025)

$1,001,916,676

The Jungle Book (2016)

$966,550,600

Maleficent (2014)

$759,853,685

The Little Mermaid (2023)

$569,626,289

Cinderella (2015)

$542,358,331

Dumbo (2019)

$353,284,621

That being said, Lilo & Sтιтch now has a chance of surpᴀssing Alice in Wonderland and becoming the fourth-highest-grossing Disney remake. The 2025 film has remained in the top 10 for months now, as audiences have continued to go and see it repeatedly on the big screen.

Still, Lilo & Sтιтch pulling in another $23 million is not ᴀssured, especially with its digital release this week. In the end, it will likely come close to overtaking Alice in Wonderland, but will not make quite enough to unseat it. The film’s status as Disney’s fifth-biggest remake, overtaking The Jungle Book and Maleficent, is still significant.

Fortunately, the funds that Lilo & Sтιтch have secured in this very different moviegoing climate have already made it an unmitigated success. Sequels are sure to follow and could find much greater returns than Alice Through the Looking Glᴀss did. Hopefully, the creative team behind Lilo & Sтιтch gets moving on a follow-up soon.
