A new buddy comedy movie from Netflix, drawing parallels to Bad Boys, has instantly become a global hit. The popular franchise, featuring Martin Lawrence and Will Smith as Miami detectives, continues to be a commercial success and is largely well-received by audiences. Bad Boys: Ride or Die premiered last year and generated over $400 million before releasing on Netflix, where it managed to chart at number one.
The streaming service also houses many more high-performing action comedy films, including Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and The Union. Back in Action, starring Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx, was another major hit upon release. The streaming movie boasted impressive viewership numbers and quickly climbed the Netflix charts, despite poor audience reception.
Almost Cops Is An Instant Success
The Buddy Comedy Is Charting On Netflix
Almost Cops recently debuted on Netflix and is similar to Bad Boys, incorporating humor and teaming up a pair of characters. The Dutch comedy, originally named Bad Boa’s, is directed by Gonzalo Fernandez Carmona. It follows a community officer who begins working alongside a former detective, after the death of their mutual friend.
Released on July 11, Almost Cops features a cast including Jandino Asporaat, Werner Kolf, Florence Vos Weeda, Ferdi Stofmeel, Teun Kuilboer, Juliette van Ardenne, and Stephanie van Eer. Now, in a brief amount of time, the film is achieving mᴀssive success on streaming.
Almost Cops ranks second on the Netflix Global Top 10 Non-English chart for the week of July 7–13. Racking up 10 million views, the buddy comedy film is right behind Brick and just ahead of Ziam. Other movies on the chart include Aap Jaisa Koi, Thug Life, Raid 2, My Love Will Make You Disappear, K.O., A Brother and 7 Siblings, and Exterritorial.
What This Means For Almost Cops
Netflix Could Have A New Franchise
Considering how successful Bad Boys has become, Almost Cops could potentially turn into a comparable film series. Following the release of the original movie, Bad Boys has spawned various sequels. The recent installments, Bad Boys for Life and Bad Boys: Ride or Die, each made more than $400 million and earned Tomatometer scores of 76% and 65%, respectively.
The streaming platform has found success launching police comedy movies, but Almost Cops seems especially primed for sequels. It could follow the Bad Boys franchise and find ways to unite Ramon and Jack through future missions and/or criminal investigations.
Looking ahead, it will be interesting to see whether the film maintains its strong viewership, but given how Almost Cops is already performing, Netflix could have a successful buddy comedy franchise of its own.
