The A24 romance movie Materialists has pᴀssed a major box office milestone that sees it climbing up a major chart. The project was written and directed by Celine Song, who made her feature debut as both a director and screenwriter with 2023’s Past Lives, which was nominated for the Oscars for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.
2025’s Materialists follows successful matchmaker Lucy Mason (Dakota Johnson) as she navigates her own personal life, ᴀssessing the romantic potential of two candidates, namely her cater waiter ex John (Chris Evans) and the handsome financier Harry (Pedro Pascal). The movie also stars Sawyer Spielberg, Zoë Winters, and Marin Ireland.
Per The Numbers, Materialists has pᴀssed the $50 million milestone worldwide. Its domestic box office haul of $35.64 million and international gross of $14.4 million have seen it climb to a cumulative worldwide total of $50.04 million.
With this new box office milestone, Materialists has shouldered past the $50.02 million gross of 2019’s Uncut Gems to become A24’s 13th highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide. It has already surpᴀssed a number of notable тιтles, including Past Lives, Midsommar, Ex Machina, The Witch, Warfare, Minari, Room, Spring Breakers, and The Iron Claw.
What This Means For Materialists
It May Not Reach The Top 10
For quite some time, the Chris Evans movie has been the second highest-grossing romance movie of the year (behind Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, which grossed $139.6 million internationally and went direct to Peacock in the U.S.).
However, it ultimately seems unlikely that Materialists will be able to climb much higher up the chart. While only $3.96 million separates it from outgrossing the 2022 Brendan Fraser drama The Whale and joining A24’s Top 10, the Celine Song movie’s theatrical run is winding down.
Below, see a breakdown of the movies ahead of Materialists on A24’s all-time chart:
Rank |
тιтle |
Worldwide Box Office |
---|---|---|
#9 |
We Live in Time (2024) |
$57.1 million |
#10 |
The Whale (2022) |
$54 million |
#11 |
The Zone of Interest (2023) |
$52.5 million |
#12 |
The Brutalist (2024) |
$50.2 million |
#13 |
Materialists (2025) |
$50.04 million |
Materialists is currently on a trajectory to earn less than $500,000 during its next frame at the domestic box office, which could potentially push it past The Brutalist to hit No. 12, at the very least. However, it premieres on premium VOD on July 22, which may mean that this weekend will be the last where it is a serious box office contender.
Our Take On The Materialists Box Office Milestone
It May Not Weather The Premiere of Fantastic Four
Ultimately, it remains to be seen how high the Pedro Pascal movie can climb before it is fully out of theaters. His next movie, the upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps, is due to premiere on July 25, which could either help or hurt it.
The increased interest in Pascal in the wake of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movie’s premiere could potentially draw attention to his new romance movie. Alternatively, the presence of two Pedro Pascal movies in theaters at once could be the final death knell for Materialists as fans of the star move on to his newest outing.
