I Know What You Did Last Summer has broken a disappointing box office record. The 2025 horror movie is a legacy sequel to the 1997 slasher of the same name, which adapted the 1973 Lois Duncan novel and launched a multimedia franchise that includes a 1998 theatrical sequel, a 2006 direct-to-video sequel, and a one-season reboot series from 2021.
The I Know What You Did Last Summer release sees the movie arrive during a weekend that is sandwiched between the releases of two major superhero movies, namely DC’s Superman on July 11 and Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps on July 25.
Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, as of Saturday morning, 2025’s I Know What You Did Last Summer is projected to close out its opening weekend with a 3-day domestic box office total between $13 and $14 million. Even if it hits the upper end of this range, it will earn the lowest domestic debut of the entire franchise.
The previous record-holder for the lowest debut was the original 1997 I Know What You Did Last Summer, which grossed $15.8 million during its opening weekend. It has held this franchise record for 27 years.
What This Means For I Know What You Did Last Summer
Its Record Looks Even Worse In Context
This unfortunate record for 2025’s I Know What You Did Last Summer gets even worse when considering the fact that both of the franchise’s previous theatrical installments debuted more than 25 years ago. This means that their debut totals, when adjusted for inflation, are nearly double what the raw numbers reflect.
Below, see a breakdown of the raw and adjusted numbers for the debuts of both previous theatrical I Know What You Did Last Summer movies.
тιтle |
Debut |
Adj. Debut |
---|---|---|
I Know What You Did Last Summer (1997) |
$15.8 million |
$31.5 million |
I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998) |
$16.5 million |
$32.5 million |
One reason for the movie breaking this unfortunate record could be the fact that I Know What You Did Last Summer reviews have not been particularly favorable. While its Rotten Tomatoes score of 37% is still the second-best in the franchise (behind the original’s 46%), it may not have spurred audiences to be eager to see it in theaters.
Our Take On The I Know What You Did Last Summer Record
The Movie Could Still Turn A Profit
This franchise record doesn’t necessarily mean that the movie will be a failure. I Know What You Did Last Summer only comes with a reported budget of $18 million (compared to the original’s $17 million and the sequel’s $24 million), so it is likely still on track to end up in the black by the end of its theatrical run.
However, unless I Know What You Did Last Summer shows strong audience hold in the coming weeks, its performance may indicate that the franchise has not garnered enough nostalgia for it to follow in the footsteps of the 2022 legacy sequel Scream and continue generating further sequels in the 1990s slasher franchise.
