10 Years Ago, Alan Ritchson Was Surprisingly Hilarious In This Better-Than-You-Think Comedy

Today, Alan Ritchson is best known for portraying Jack Reacher in Prime Video’s Reacher, but 10 years prior, he was part of the ensemble for an underrated romantic comedy. Though Ritchson has appeared in more dramas and action-heavy TV shows and films in recent years, he’s no stranger to comedy.

Ritchson got his start with a guest role in Smallville, but earned his first major role shortly after. In the short-lived sitcom Blue Mountain State, Ritchson played the captain of the series’ football team, Thad Castle. While Ritchson’s action roles certainly overshadow his work in comedy, the actor stood out as one of the best parts of a 2015 comedy film led by Kevin Hart.

Alan Ritchson Played Kip In The Wedding Ringer

Kip Is One Of Seven Fake Groomsmen Hired By Kevin Hart’s Character

The Wedding Ringer is a buddy rom-com centered around a service that provides grooms with a set of fake friends to fill out their wedding party. Hart’s character runs the best man service and is accompanied by Josh Gad and Kaley Cuoco as the soon-to-be married couple. Ritchson stars as one of the seven groomsmen in the film, Kip.

Kip is one of the four men who audition for a role in Doug’s (Gad) wedding, and while he’s not the smartest of the bunch, he secures his spot in the group by showing off his muscular physique and humorously flexing his pecs. Like Kip, each groomsman has a unique party trick or quirk about them that sets them apart from others.

The Wedding Ringer Is An Underrated Comedy

It’s A Fun Time Filled With Plenty Of Absurdity And Just Enough Heartfelt Moments

Josh Gad, Kaley Cuoco, Olivia Thirlby, and Kevin Hart stand alongside one another.

The Wedding Ringer isn’t among the best comedy films of the 2010s, but it has a lot going for it that makes for an entertaining and easy watch. In spite of its unique premise and solid cast, The Wedding Ringer has not been received positively by critics over the years, though audiences seem to be more welcoming of the film.

The Wedding Ringer has a Rotten Tomatoes critics score of 29% and an audience score of 63%.

There’s an incredibly fun balance of awkward and absurd comedic moments throughout The Wedding Ringer that Ritchson and his co-stars find themselves to be comfortable within. Each actor takes on the oddities of their roles and the shticks that come with their characters with no hesitation, and it’s their full commitment that makes The Wedding Ringer a great watch.

The Wedding Ringer has its heartfelt moments as well, particularly between Hart and Gad.

The chemistry between the ensemble is strong, and like any good friendship comedy, The Wedding Ringer has its heartfelt moments as well, particularly between Hart and Gad. These scenes, including a vulnerable instance that points to the possibility of a real, non-business friendship between the two, don’t undermine any of the film’s humor, but rather, they give audiences something greater to invest in.

The Cast Of The Wedding Ringer Is Great

Familiar And Reliable Comedic Actors Carry The Film

Ritchson’s best work may be in grittier projects, but he delivers an enjoyable comedic performance in The Wedding Ringer as well. Many of the performances alongside Ritchson are just as amusing. Appearing in supporting roles are comedians Affion Crockett, Jorge Garcia, and Corey Holcomb as various members of the wedding party, and Think Like a Man star Jenifer Lewis.

These actors, having worked in comedy spaces on and off-screen for many years before The Wedding Ringer, are clearly in their element and having a great time. The relaxed and earnest performances delivered by The Wedding Ringer‘s cast add to the movie’s entertainment quality, allowing it to be a satisfying, straightforward mid-2010s comedy film that isn’t perfect, but is still quite fun.
