The Purge 6 Gets Major Script & Filming Update As Franchise Creator Hints At Returning Characters

The Purge 6 gets a major script update with returning character teases from creator James DeMonaco, who wrote all five installments in the franchise, starting with 2013’s The Purge. Taking place in a dystopian, crime-free America, each movie revolves around the annual event, where all crimes are legal for 12 hours on a single day.

In a recent interview with Bloody Disgusting, DeMonaco offered a script update and a character tease for The Purge 6. The franchise creator revealed that they have “finished a script,” and have “just handed it” to the franchise’s long-time producer, Jason Blum.

He shared that they are hoping to shoot as soon as “the end of this year” or “next year” and teased that a fan-favorite character “might be coming back,” though he didn’t reveal a name. Check out his comment below:

I just finished a script. My producer, Sébastien Lemercier, has read multiple drafts, given me notes. We just handed it to Jason [Blum]. I’m really happy with it. I hope they like it. I think it’s cool and fun. We’re hoping next year would be great to shoot, maybe the end of this year if timing works out. But now it’s with the powers that be, so we’ll see what happens.

People’s favorite character might be coming back, I can say without naming who that is; a couple of people who could be. But someone’s coming back who I love and I think the audience loves.

What This Means For The Purge 6

The Purge 6 Might Be Heading To Production Soon

It sounds like DeMonaco may have finished the final script or a version that’s very close to it, having gone through multiple drafts and revisions. In this update, the Purge creator also offered some insight into the projected production start time, hinting that the franchise could return in the near future.

While each The Purge movie has its own ensemble of cast, a few characters can be spotted in different films. Frank Grillo’s Sgt. Leo Barnes appeared in both The Purge: Anarchy and Election Year as a key figure in the anti-purge movement, following the loss of his son. Edwin Hodge’s Dante Bishop, who first appeared in the 2013 film, returned in both Anarchy and Election Year.

Additionally, the Polite Leader from the first two films is also a prominent figure in the franchise. Although the director doesn’t reveal who is returning, the character may be Leo based on an update from Grillo. In February 2024, he shared with ScreenRant that the sixth installment was about his character and said the following:

It would be the last of the last of the last, it’s like the guy who keeps retiring.

Our Take On The Purge 6’s Script Update

The Purge 6 Is Coming Soon

Since The Forever Purge was released in 2021, there has been a lack of movement around the sixth movie. However, this might change rapidly as The Purge 6‘s script is at the final stage of review. It sounds like if everything looks good, things might move fast after having stayed in limbo for years.

A production’s start time around the end of this year could put the movie’s release date as early as next year or 2027, with post-production typically lasting from several months to a year.

Sadly, DeMonaco didn’t offer any additional teasers of what The Purge 6 will be about. Still, the next film is believed to explore the aftermath of The Forever Purge and the consequences of Purge-like violence.
