Happy Gilmore 2 Director Wants To Do A Sequel To Adam Sandler’s $58M Box Office Disappointment

The director of Happy Gilmore 2 has revealed what Adam Sandler movie he would like to make a sequel to next. Although he is best known for feature-length comedies, Sandler got his start as a cast member on Saturday Night Live, which was a stint that ran from 1990 to 1995.

Two early Adam Sandler movies were his key to finding big screen success. The first was 1995’s Billy Madison, in which he played a man who has 24 weeks to graduate grades 1 through 12, and the second was 1996’s Happy Gilmore, in which he played a vulgar hockey player who becomes a golf sensation.

From there, he went on to star in a number of prominent movies, including the rom-coms 50 First Dates and The Wedding Singer, the dramas Uncut Gems and Hustle, and the Netflix comedies Murder Mystery, Murder Mystery 2, Hubie Halloween, and You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.

Kyle Newacheck Wants To Do Another Adam Sandler Legacy Sequel

He Has Already Helmed Happy Gilmore 2

Kyle Newacheck, who directed the upcoming Happy Gilmore 2, has shared another Adam Sandler movie that he would be interested in making. He has stepped in for original director Dennis Dugan on the legacy sequel, which follows Happy coming out of retirement so he can pay for his daughter Vienna (Sunny Sandler) to go to ballet school.

The cast of Happy Gilmore 2 also includes Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald, Ben Stiller, Dennis Dugan, Benny Safdie, Kevin Nealon, Conor Sherry, and Bad Bunny.

ComicBook.com recently interviewed Kyle Newacheck ahead of Happy Gilmore 2‘s debut on Netflix on July 25. When discussing other Sandler movies that deserve follow-ups, he talked about potentially making a sequel to 2000’s Little Nicky, in which the actor portrayed the Devil’s son, who is sent to earth to maintain the balance between Good and Evil.

The movie, which only grossed $58 million in theaters against a reported budget of $85 million, came to mind for Newacheck because Adam Sandler “was always doing the Little Nicky voice on set.” He reflected that the movie could use its fantastical premise to satirize the state of the world and “call attention to some crazy s— going on.

Read Newacheck’s full quote below:

Here’s one that I think would be interesting now. Because [Sandler] was always doing the Little Nicky voice on set so just hearing it, I was like, I bet that would be excellent now too. I bet we could do something really crazy with Little Nicky. I think there’s something… you know, Happy Gilmore is grounded and he’s able to comment on the world in this movie and kind of send its themes out, but I feel like Little Nicky in the fantastic realm would be really able to call attention to some crazy s— going on in the world right now.

What This Means For Little Nicky 2

Should The Movie Actually Happen?

At first glance, Little Nicky‘s failure in theaters would not seem to make it good fodder for a sequel. Additionally, it was nominated for five Razzie awards (it lost all five to Battlefield Earth) and has since earned a dismal Rotten Tomatoes score of 22%.

However, the primary reason Little Nicky bombed was its budget. The original Happy Gilmore only grossed $41.4 million in theaters, which is roughly $15 million less than Little Nicky. However, it became a hit because it only had a budget of $12 million.

Considering the fact that Sandler’s 2000 movie initially drew in a much bigger audience than its predecessor, following Happy Gilmore 2 with Little Nicky 2 might work, as long as the movie’s budget could be kept under control.
