Ryan Gosling Starring In New Action Comedy, & Its тιтle Hilariously Builds On A Unique Trend

Ryan Gosling‘s new movie continues a strange trend for the star. Gosling is a well-known actor who got his start at age 13 and became a major adult star thanks to his performance in the 2004 Nicholas Sparks romance The Notebook. He has now been nominated for three Oscars, for his performances in Half Nelson, La La Land, and Barbie.

Ryan Gosling movies are notable for giving the star a broad variety of genres to bring to life. In addition to romance, his wide-ranging resume includes drama (Blue Valentine), comedy (Crazy, Stupid, Love.), thriller (Murder by Numbers), action (The Gray Man), sci-fi (Blade Runner 2049), and more.

Per ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, one of Ryan Gosling’s next movies will be an action comedy. He has boarded the cast of the Amazon MGM Studios production Tough Guys, which will also star Will Ferrell.

The movie, which is based on a spec script by Daniel Gold (Workin’ Moms) and does not yet have a director attached, follows two henchmen who try to leave their lives of crime behind.

Gosling and Ferrell are also in talks to produce via Open Invite Entertainment and Gloria Sanchez Productions respectively, alongside Open Invite’s Jessie Henderson, Gloria Sanchez’s Jessica Elbaum. Also in talks are executive producers Trevor Engelson and Aaron Folbe, via Underground.

Tough Guys Continues A Major Trend For The Star

Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe peer around a corner in The Nice Guys

One unique thing about Tough Guys is the fact that it will mark Ryan Gosling’s third action-comedy with “guy” in the тιтle, after 2016’s The Nice Guys (in which he played down-on-his-luck private detective Holland March) and 2024’s The Fall Guy (in which he played stunt performer Colt Seavers).

Ryan Gosling also starred in two movies with “man” in the тιтle, namely 2018’s First Man and 2022’s The Gray Man.

While this is only the case to a lesser degree, Tough Guys also continues an action-comedy trend for Will Ferrell movies, considering the fact that he previously starred opposite Mark Wahlberg in the 2010 buddy cop movie The Other Guys.

The log line of Tough Guys makes it seem like it could also continue a trend of Ryan Gosling’s “guy” movies of having his character be something of a loser who is plunged into a high-octane adventure.

It Could Break A Different Trend

Another trend with these movies is underwhelming box office. While their exact break-even points are unknown, movies often need to earn back two and a half times their budgets, which makes it unlikely that either The Nice Guys (which earned $62.8 million against its reported $50 million budget) or The Fall Guy ($181.2 million against $150 million) turned a profit in theaters.

However, Ryan Gosling‘s new co-star could turn that trend around. The Fall Guy star previously performed opposite Will Ferrell in 2023’s Barbie, which was the highest-grossing movie of 2023. Their reunion could potentially help Tough Guys become a much more substantial success worldwide, should Amazon MGM Studios opt to give it a theatrical run.
