Tons of fantastic movies have already been released this year, but one sleeper hit that you may have missed in theaters is finally releasing at home next weekend. Thanks to the modern state of theatrical releases, many mid-budget and non-blockbuster movies are overlooked during their theatrical runs, causing some fantastic movies to not reach their full potential for success until they are released on digital marketplaces.
The 2025 summer movie season has been a crowded one, with blockbuster after blockbuster getting released each weekend. Lilo & Sтιтch and How to Train Your Dragon are two notable live-action remakes that have been released this summer, while Thunderbolts, Superman, and Fantastic Four make up the superhero block. Meanwhile, movies like Jurᴀssic World Rebirth and F1 continue to rake in money.
While there are a lot of people that love these movies, their mᴀssive marketing campaigns and large pull have caused them to overshadow some smaller summer releases. That is the case for this romantic comedy that will be coming to digital and streaming very soon.
Materialists Releases On Digital Next Week After Successful Theatrical Run
Even though some theaters still have showtimes for Materialists, the romantic comedy is set to hit digital marketplaces next week. The film will be released on PVOD on July 22, 2025, with it most likely being available for purchase on platforms like Apple TV, Prime Video, YouTube, and more.
Directed by Past Lives‘ Celine Song, Materialists tells the story of a New York City matchmaker who finally goes on a journey to find her own match. She becomes torn between a wealthy, dreamy, socialite man of her dreams and her not-so-great ex-boyfriend, with her having to choose exactly what she wants to look for in a partner.
Materialists was released in theaters on June 13, 2025, with the film having a reported budget of $20 million. The movie wasn’t a mᴀssive hit out of the gate, but it did make $12 million in its opening weekend, which is impressive considering that it had to compete against How to Train Your Dragon and Lilo & Sтιтch.
As of the writing of this article, Materialists has made $49.6 million at the box office. This means, while not a mᴀssive success, Materialists likely turned a profit, which is good for a mid-budget romantic comedy.
One of the best things about the film’s box office performance is that Materialists sold enough tickets to get good word of mouth, but it hasn’t been seen by a lot of people. So, it is possible that Materialists could have a surge in popularity when it is released on digital, and the same can be said for when it is released on streaming.
