Tom Holland’s $407M Blockbuster Is Now On Prime Video & It Still Needs A Sequel

As fans of Tom Holland continue to wait for an Uncharted sequel, one of his biggest blockbusters has found a new streaming home. Holland emerged as one of the most popular up-and-coming stars in Hollywood in the 2010s, as following his acclaimed breakout role in The Impossible, he became the MCU’s Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man.

Holland has appeared in six MCU movies to date, with his fourth standalone project on the way with the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. His career has also expanded into some exciting new projects outside the MCU, including joining the cast of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.

As exciting as his upcoming slate of movies is, many fans are disappointed to see no sign of a continuation of another big movie franchise Holland leads.

Uncharted’s New Streaming Release Is A Reminder The Movie Needs A Sequel

Uncharted Is Available On Prime Video

Uncharted landed on Prime Video on July 15, three years after its theatrical release, and still no sequel to speak of. Based on the hugely popular video game franchise from Naughty Dog, Uncharted stars Tom Holland as Nathan Drake, a young man who is roped into a treasure hunt by Sully (Mark Wahlberg), an old friend of Nathan’s long-lost brother.

Uncharted was quickly surrounded by controversy due to its casting choices, with many fans questioning the younger take on Drake with Holland in this role. The fact that Wahlberg doesn’t sport Sully’s trademark mustache from the Uncharted games added to the fan outrage.

Despite a rather mixed response from critics, with 41% on Rotten Tomatoes, Uncharted was a box office hit, earning $407 million (via Box Office Mojo). With two post-credits scenes hinting at big things ahead, it’s clear a cinematic franchise was planned. But while fans can watch the first movie on Prime Video now, they’ll have to keep waiting for Uncharted 2.

What’s Going On With Uncharted 2?

The Sequel Is Still being Planned

As much as Uncharted was a success, fans may worry about how long Uncharted 2 is taking. This is a big franchise, and Sony certainly began the first movie with its eyes on the future. It is rare for such a property to go three years without any real movement on a sequel.

Holland is currently filming The Odyssey right now and will then switch to filming Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

This is especially surprising considering that Uncharted‘s ending was already setting up some major storylines, including the return of Nathan’s brother, Sam Drake, and the introduction of the franchise villain, Gabriel Roman. With those ideas in place, a sequel could have moved along quite quickly.

The latest update on Uncharted 2 is that the script is being written, and they are waiting for Tom Holland’s busy schedule to clear up. Holland is currently filming The Odyssey right now and will then switch to filming Spider-Man: Brand New Day. ᴀssuming the script is ready, it seems likely Uncharted 2 would be his next project.

While it is certainly a long hiatus, those who remember all the failed attempts and delays that happened before the first Uncharted movie was released are probably used to waiting.
