Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s setup has placed Tom Holland into an interesting – if unusual – movie contest with himself in the near future. The fourth MCU Spider-Man movie is already in an unusual position in many senses, since it’s the start of a new era for Spider-Man following Spider-Man: No Way Home‘s ending and a several-year-long hiatus.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s story being placed in the middle of the Multiverse Saga makes this seem doubly true, since it raises a lot of possibilities about what this part of the MCU timeline might look like. That said, perhaps the most unusual part of Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s setup is how it sets up a bizarre movie compeтιтion for its lead actor.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day Is Set To Release In July 2026
There have been various updates about Spider-Man: Brand New Day since it was first announced, including its July 24, 2026 release date being confirmed by Sony Pictures in October 2024. This cemented a 5-year-long delay between Spider-Man: No Way Home and the upcoming MCU movie, which is no small window of time.
Spider-Man: No Way Home released in December 2021.
However, this does make sense in terms of what these two respective films mean for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Spider-Man: No Way Home was the end of Spider-Man’s first MCU trilogy, so it makes sense to have this larger window of time between the third and fourth movies, especially since it leaves time for Peter’s story to have developed in-universe off-screen.
With Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse releasing in 2023, and Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man releasing in 2025, there’s also been no shortage of on-screen Spider-Man adventures during this time. That said, Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s July 2026 window does raise one fascinating scenario for its lead actor.
Another Major Tom Holland Movie Is Also Set To Release In July 2026
Tom Holland’s fourth Spider-Man solo movie already makes July 2026 an important time for the actor, especially given the considerable success the prior MCU Spider-Man movies have enjoyed. That said, this isn’t the only big movie Holland is a part of that’s set to release in July 2026.
Tom Holland was revealed to be a part of the cast of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey in October 2024, putting him not only in a film helmed by a blockbuster expert, but alongside other big actors such as Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, and Robert Pattinson on-screen. Interestingly, The Odyssey is also set to release in July 2026.
While the two movies aren’t set to release on the same day – as Spider-Man: Brand New Day is due to debut on July 24, 2026, and The Odyssey is itself marked for a July 17, 2026 release – these dates still place them pretty close to one another. This essentially puts Tom Holland in a box office compeтιтion with himself, especially since it seems he plays key roles in both releases.
July 2026’s Box Office Will See A Bizarre Holland Vs Holland Compeтιтion
Both Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey seem to have a good chance of being the big box office hit of July 2026. Spider-Man movies are generally heavy-hitters, but the same can be said for movies directed by Christopher Nolan, meaning the two films look set to be in healthy compeтιтion due to their release windows overlapping.
Indeed, with several Spider-Man films amᴀssing over $1 billion in their respective box offices, and several Nolan movies managing to reach or otherwise come close to this milestone, Brand New Day and The Odyssey both stand a chance of being the biggest film of the year. However, only one can be.
As it stands, this effectively pits Holland’s 2026 movies against one another for the top box office spot of this time period, since he’s Spider-Man in one, and the son of The Odyssey’s main character in the other. This doesn’t bode poorly for the actor himself – since it seems both will likely prove successful in their own right – but it does create an unusual circumstance for this release window.
Which Movie Is Likely To Win The Holland Vs Holland Box Office Race?
July is conventionally a major time for blockbusters, and superhero movies are no exception. With Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: No Way Home both releasing in July themselves – and ᴅᴇᴀᴅpool & Wolverine proving the box office potential of this period with its $1.3 billion success (via The Numbers) – releasing Spider-Man: Brand New Day at this time makes a lot of sense.
It’s not yet clear whether Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be able to live up to No Way Home‘s results, since it was able to draw on the popularity of returning pre-MCU Spider-Man actors. That said, Spider-Man: Far From Home netted itself $1.1 billion (The Numbers) without this added selling point, which is promising for the 2026 film.
On the other side of things, Nolan’s $1 billion movies have been superhero releases themselves, thanks to the results of The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Returns, which does suggest the non-superhero 2026 might fare less strikingly. That said, it doesn’t seem impossible for The Odyssey to make more than Spider-Man: Brand New Day altogether.
While it released years later, Oppenheimer notably did make more than Spider-Man: Homecoming in its worldwide box office results, and The Odyssey‘s star-studded cast – Holland included – could be what it needs to make even just that bit more than its July MCU counterpart. Whatever happens, though, it’s clear Spider-Man: Brand New Day‘s release window will be a fascinating one.
