$70M Toy-Based Franchise Is Developing A Live-Action Movie After Barbie’s Success

Barbie was a tremendous success upon its release in 2023, beating even generous predictions. The film made over $1.4 billion, becoming the highest-grossing movie during the year of its release. The film also did really well among critics and was nominated for multiple Oscars.

In response, Mattel has accelerated production on multiple toy-based movies. At this point, some of them are coming sooner rather than later. The Masters of the Universe live-action movie, for example, already has a star-studded main cast attached and is slated for release on June 5, 2026.

That is far from the only toy-based movie being made by Mattel in the upcoming years. The company is also working on Barney and Thomas the Tank Engine movies, and has confirmed films based on View-Master, American Girl, and H๏τ Wheels. Now, another major company has confirmed its development of another toy-based film. This time, it will be based on a franchise that already has significant existing success.

A My Little Pony Movie Is In The Works

A My Little Pony live-action movie is officially in development. This property is not owned by Mattel, but rather stems from Hasbro toys that originated in 1981. They were originally distributed as My Pretty Pony before later launching as My Little Pony in 1982, and gaining popularity throughout the 1980s.

Since the toys’ release, My Little Pony has become a major media franchise. There have been multiple shows released based on the toys, as well as theatrically released movies whose total box office has totaled $70 million.

As per Variety, Hasbro is about to take the toy franchise to the next level by making a live-action My Little Pony movie. The feature film will be developed by Amazon MGM Studios and Hasbro. While it seems a theatrical release is planned, specific plot details are not yet available.

Our Take On The My Little Pony Movie

This Could Be A Mᴀssive Hit

Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash as a bard and a rogue in the My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic episode Dungeons and Discords

My Little Pony has the potential to do incredibly well at the box office. While originally marketed towards young girls as the target audience, the 2010 series My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic attracted a wider audience. Suddenly, male audiences who labeled themselves “bronies” became more interested in the IP.

Of course, doing well at the box office will rely on some level of competency as a film, but the Hasbro adaptation certainly has great success potential given both the toy’s popularity and the post-2010 expanded following.

Barbie was known for bringing women back to the movie theaters. My Little Pony could be a winner for its multi-demographic appeal. Of course, doing well at the box office will rely on some level of competency as a film, but the Hasbro adaptation certainly has great success potential given both the toy’s popularity and the post-2010 expanded following.
