“I Got Sidetracked”: Zack Snyder Addresses His $166 Million Sci-Fi Franchise’s Future

Rebel Moon has quickly become one of Zack Snyder’s most popular and profitable sci-fi franchises after leaving the DC universe behind, but it could be a while before audiences get to see the next installment. The first two movies were released in 2023 and 2024, respectively, and quickly became some of Netflix’s most frequently watched blockbusters on the platform.

The Rebel Moon cast includes names such as Sofia Boutella, Ed Skrein, Charlie Hunnam, and Charlotte Maggi, and follows a human colony on the outskirts of the universe that finds itself targeted by a much larger enemy and forced to seek help from the neighboring planets. Despite mixed reviews for Rebel Moon, the film was received very warmly by Zack Snyder’s existing fan base.

However, Snyder has recently revealed that Rebel Moon isn’t currently his priority. Speaking with Variety, the director has confirmed that he’s currently working on an “LAPD SWAT movie” for Netflix, which is taking up the majority of his time and preventing him from returning to the sci-fi franchise. As such, he won’t be returning to Rebel Moon until this latest movie is finished:

I got sidetracked into this — not sidetracked, it’s all uptown problems, as they say — for Netflix, I’m working on an LAPD SWAT movie […] So I was like, OK, well, I’m gonna just sort of let that ‘Rebel Moon’ world boil for a minute, and I’m gonna go do this. And frankly, it was a very exhausting, long process doing the two movies together. So it was nice to have a bit of a break from it. I love it like crazy, but it’s nice to have a bit of a break. So yeah, we’ll see after I finish this, when I come back, where we are with everything.

What Zack Snyder’s Comments Mean For Rebel Moon’s Future

The Director Is Currently Working On A New Project

Although it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise, given how few updates there have been on Rebel Moon lately, Snyder’s recent comments effectively prove that he won’t be coming back to the franchise until his commitments to Netflix are completed. Even then, Snyder’s upcoming project could end up displacing Rebel Moon altogether if it’s received positively.

The poor reviews for Rebel Moon will understandably have made Netflix hesitant to return to the franchise, even though Snyder clearly seems eager to come back. His use of the phrase “sidetracked” effectively demonstrates where his true pᴀssion lies, but it’s also fair to say that the director needed (and deserved) a break from such a demanding production process.

Our Take On Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon Comments

Snyder’s LAPD Movie Sounds Like A Fun Departure

Ultimately, it’s encouraging to see that Snyder hasn’t been deterred by the polarizing reviews of his previous movie, and is trying something completely new with this “LAPD SWAT movie”. There are plenty of flaws in Rebel Moon that need fixing before a third movie can be made, and taking a break to make something totally different may be exactly what Snyder needs before returning to the universe.
