“There’s No Good Way To Do It”: David Corenswet Addresses DCU’s Flying Superman Scenes After Initial Controversy

David Corenswet addresses how goofy he can look during his flight scenes in Superman. Before James Gunn’s Superman hit theaters, a promotional teaser that featured the тιтular DC hero flying away from the Fortress of Solitude became viral online. David Corenswet’s Superman looked silly, according to online reactions that pointed out the character’s strange pose and facial expression. This scene takes place during Superman‘s opening sequence, but it doesn’t stand out as much during the actual film.

During his interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Superman star David Corenswet acknowledged it’s easy to look ridiculous while shooting flying scenes. Corenswet explains that “there’s no good way to do it, because if you look too calm and cool, then it doesn’t look like you’re flying.” Jimmy Fallon showed Corenswet a few Superman stills that varied from grandiose to funny, and Corenswet explained why he looked so different in each of them. Read Corenswet’s full quote below:

“There’s no good way to do it, because if you look too calm and cool, then it doesn’t look like you’re flying. And it’s very easy to look very silly.”

“(…) I don’t want to throw anybody under the bus but James and his cinematrographer, Henry Braham, do have this habit of putting very wide lenses on the camera and then getting three inches from your face, which isn’t the most flattering angle. But I’ll tell you what, on the big screen, it really makes you feel like you’re right there with us.”

What David Corenswet’s Flying Comments Mean For Superman

David Corenswet’s Superman Looks Amazing In Motion

Still images don’t do Superman‘s flying scenes justice. The reason why David Corenswet’s Superman often looks goofy in these stills is the same reason why the character looks so good in motion. The cinematography, camerawork, and performance focus on conveying Superman’s powerful and dynamic flying style, and a single still image fails to capture that.

Images like Superman‘s first official poster show David Corenswet’s тιтular hero from a more flattering angle, but they’re more symbolic than practical. Superman looks more calm and confident, but the sense of dynamic movement is lost. In the movie, Superman goes through a wide range of emotions during battle, and both his facial expressions and his aerial movements clearly reflect it.

Superman Isn’t The Only Character To Look Silly In Movie Stills

David Corenswet's Kal El flies towards the sky in James Gunn's Superman

David Corenswet’s Superman may have gone viral for his funny flying image, but several other movie characters have gone through something similar. Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s Tails have also starred in viral memes that poke fun at their flying scenes. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s Adam Warlock flying scenes, directed by James Gunn, also used similar techniques that look much better in motion.

Stills of Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl screeching while flying have also been the subject of memes after the release of Superman.

Looking back, Man of Steel‘s flying scenes are slower-paced than Superman‘s, which allows them to show the hero’s motion in more detail. However, Henry Cavill’s Superman can also look rather strange in certain flying scenes if they’re paused at the wrong moment. To enjoy Superman‘s flying scenes to the fullest, it’s best to watch them in full.
