I Can’t Decide Which New Star Wars LEGO Droid I Want More

As a major Star Wars fan who’s collected various LEGO sets for years, I truly can’t decide which new droid model I like best. In 20225, LEGO Star Wars hasn’t been without its controversies and debates over model size and prices. That said, the steady release of new large-scale droid models has been largely seen as one of the best Star Wars sub-themes LEGO has introduced in some time.

Released at the beginning of July, collectors can now purchase both the new Chopper (C1-10P) Astromech Droid (75416) and the new Battle Droid with STAP (75428). Both sets are large-scale display models, depicting classic droids from the galaxy far, far away, and I’m pretty impressed with both across the board. Here’s a breakdown of each new LEGO Star Wars droid set, including piece counts and price tags.

Inspired by General Hera Syndulla’s iconic droid companion from Star Wars Rebels and Ahsoka, Chopper now has his very own LEGO set. Consisting of just over 1000 pieces, the new droid set is capable of “head movements, posable arms, and hidden tools”. He also has his signature middle wheel, rather than a third leg like R2-D2 does.

The set also comes with a smaller Chopper minifigure and an information plaque containing specs about the ornery and often-stubborn astromech. Based on its size, Chopper is indeed to scale with LEGO’s R2-D2 and C-3PO models I purchased last year, a feature I really appreciate in terms of display value. With a price tag of $99.99, the price-to-piece ratio feels fairer than some other Star Wars LEGO sets.

LEGO’s new Battle Droid with STAP (75428) is also impressive, with some great display features. A fully brick-built battle droid, the B1 can be displayed on its own. However, the most commonly deployed battle droid by the Separatist Alliance can easily be mounted onto the detailed STAP, which looks very faithful to the movies.

While not perfectly to scale, the B1 should look nice next to last year’s Droideka (75381), especially on the STAP. Not unlike Chopper, the new model also comes with its own display stand and plaque, and a small B1 battle droid minifigure. While I don’t love that the model feels a little overpriced at $139.99 for 1088 pieces, the cool factor still has me hooked as a big Phantom Menace fan.
