Robert Eggers Reunites With 2 Nosferatu Stars For His Newest Horror Movie

As originally reported by Nexus Point News, Robert Eggers will be reuniting with two of the stars of his hit gothic horror remake Nosferatu for his upcoming creature feature Werwulf. Nosferatu stars Lily-Rose Depp and Aaron Taylor-Johnson are both reportedly in talks to star in the werewolf horror movie.

Slated to open on Christmas Day in 2026, Werwulf will feature a script co-written by Eggers and Sjón. While no plot details have been revealed, the movie will reportedly be set in 13th-century England and sH๏τ entirely using Old English dialogue, with annotations and translations throughout to ensure understanding.

The new film will no doubt fall in line with Eggers’ typical style, which is marked by intricate attention to detail and period realism, along with a healthy dose of spine-chilling dread. There was a sneaky tease for Werwulf buried in Nosferatu‘s extended cut, but Eggers’ latest will be another stand-alone movie like the rest of his directorial filmography.

What The Latest Casting News Means For Werwulf

Expectations Will Be High After Depp and Taylor-Johnson’s Performances In Nosferatu

For anyone who enjoyed Nosferatu, the news of Depp and Taylor-Johnson signing on for any Robert Eggers movie should be exciting. Lily-Rose Depp was undoubtedly a highlight of the surprising horror hit, as her multi-layered and at times delightfully depraved performance elevated an already terrifying tale.

Taylor-Johnson impressed as well in a supporting role, as he artfully managed to transform his character from a rigid, vampire skeptic into a broken, sickly man who had lost everything. Neither of the two stars’ roles has been revealed yet, but given the caliber of both actors, it seems reasonable to think that they will be the movie’s leads until it’s reported otherwise.

Both Depp and Taylor-Johnson have experience working with Eggers, and have both been effusive in their praise of his directing style and vision in the press tour for Nosferatu and the time after. Knowing his process and expectations can only be a benefit for them, and great performances should be the expectation heading into Werwulf.

Our Take On The Werwulf Casting News

Eggers Is Following In The Footsteps Of Other Great Directors

Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen sleepwalking in the dark in Nosferatu 2024

Werwulf is just the fifth movie that Eggers has directed, but he’s already shown a proclivity towards working with actors and actresses more than once. Anya Taylor-Joy has been cited as Eggers’ “muse”, and starred for Eggers in both The Northman and The Witch. She was in fact slated to star in Nosferatu before having to pull out due to scheduling conflicts.

Willem Dafoe has appeared in three of Eggers’ four projects so far (he is also set to star in an Eggers adaptation of A Christmas Carol), and Ralph Ineson has appeared in three of four as well (he was not in The Lighthouse). Eggers has clearly established a circle of actors and actresses that he works well with, and it seems that Lily-Rose Depp and Aaron Taylor-Johnson have become part of that group.

In addition to using Old English throughout the movie, Eggers originally intended to shoot Werwulf in black and white, although that is reportedly no longer the case.

In that regard, Eggers is following in the steps of some other great directors, who have gone to stars multiple times to produce incredible movies. For example, Martin Scorsese has produced Academy Award-winning movies for decades with Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, while Quentin Tarantino has utilized Samuel L. Jackson’s talents in six of his movies (so far).

Eggers’ extremely particular style of filmmaking is no doubt challenging, as any of his movie’s actors will tell you. However, finding people that truly understand their vision can be a tremendous benefit, and that seems to be the case with Eggers. With Lily-Rose Depp and Aaron Taylor-Johnson back, Eggers should be able to capture folk horror magic again with Werwulf.
