Netflix’s 2025 Bet On Cameron Diaz Paid Off Big Time (Despite 29% RT Score)

Cameron Diaz was one of the biggest stars in the late ’90s and early 2000s. During that time, she starred in many iconic movies, including There’s Something About Mary, Charlie’s Angels, Vanilla Sky, and My Best Friend’s Wedding. It also saw her take on a role in the more experimental Being John Malkovich.

Her career remained active throughout the 2000s, when she most notably voiced Fiona in the Shrek movies. In 2014, she played Miss Hannigan in the modern-day reimagining of the classic musical Annie.

After 2014, however, Diaz took an unexpected career break. This acting hiatus ended up being fairly extended, as she did not return to the big screen for over a decade. Now, she is gearing up to play Fiona again in Shrek 5, but it’s Diaz’s comeback film that has now been proven to be a success.

Back In Action Is A Top 20 Streaming тιтle For 2025

It Is Close To Some Big Animated Movies On The List

New viewership data has revealed just how well Back in Action did on streaming. The Netflix action movie was Diaz’s first movie in 11 years and was released right at the turn of the new year. The spy comedy starred Diaz and Jamie Foxx as a married couple who also happen to be a set of former CIA spies, who are pulled back into their lifestyles when their idenтιтies are exposed.

The movie is directed by Seth Gordon and also stars Glenn Close, Andrew Scott, Kyle Chandler, and Rylan Jackson. Back in Action did not get good reviews, earning a rotten 29% Tomatometer from the 96 critics who reviewed it on Rotten Tomatoes. This included a 5 out of 10-star review from ScreenRant‘s Ferdosa Abdi, who deemed the film “unambitious yet entertaining.”

However, new data from Nielsen (via Puck) shows that Back in Action was a huge success for Netflix in terms of viewership. The data positions the film as the No. 3 top streaming program from January 2025 through June 2025, as it was viewed over 5.2 billion times.

Back in Action is topped only by Moana 2 on Disney+ and Despicable Me 4 on Netflix. Other highly viewed тιтles on the list included Moana, The Wild Robot, The Electric State, and Kraven the Hunter.

What This Means For Back In Action

This Is Great News For Diaz

Notably, Back in Action is by far the highest-viewed among any streaming original, and this is good news for both Diaz and Netflix. For Diaz, it shows that her career comeback was successful. For Netflix, it highlights their hit-making capabilities, as this movie made it big despite negative reviews.

As this data is revealed, it will be interesting to see if Netflix attempts to re-collaborate with Diaz on future projects. They have forged the path to great returns before, evidenced by their collaborations with Lindsay Lohan. A Netflix deal would be a great way for Diaz to continue her career, should she opt to lean into this success after Back in Action.
