How To Train Your Dragon Remake’s Digital Release Date Revealed After $561M Box Office Success

The digital release date has been revealed for How to Train Your Dragon. This movie was DreamWorks Animation’s first foray into the live-action adaptation space. It remakes the first installment of the beloved Viking-era animated trilogy, which originally came out in 2010.

Director Dean DeBlois returned to the film after his tenure on the animated version, and his work was incredibly well-received overall. How to Train Your Dragon got good reviews, scoring a 77% Tomatometer. This included an 8 out of 10-star review from ScreenRant‘s Sarah Moran, who praised the cast and visuals.

Now, Universal has revealed the digital release date for How to Train Your Dragon. The film will be available digitally starting tomorrow, July 15. It will be available for purchase to both own or rent. For those who purchase the film, a number of exclusive bonus features will be available.

These bonus features include a series of deleted scenes and a gag reel. Another highlight will be the feature-length director’s commentary version.

The How to Train Your Dragon digital release will be followed by a 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD release on August 12. No streaming release date has been revealed yet.

What This Means For How To Train Your Dragon

The Movie Has Been A Huge Hit

How to Train Your Dragon will hit digital on the same day as another Universal release: M3GAN 2.0. While M3GAN 2.0 is PG-13 and can therefore be accessible to younger horror fans, its audience still skews older than How to Train Your Dragon‘s. As such, the films could both do well on digital, but still provide each other with some compeтιтion.

The July 15 digital release date is a bit earlier than one might have expected for How to Train Your Dragon. After all, the film released in theaters on June 13, giving it just over one month before hitting the digital platform.

In this time, How to Train Your Dragon became a huge box office hit. At the time of writing, the movie has made $560.7 million worldwide. This was more than the original animated How to Train Your Dragon, which made $494.8 million worldwide.

While it is possible that the live-action film could add to this total while available digitally, it will more likely continue to plateau once viewers are able to watch it at home. Even if it stops here, however, the $560.7 million gross is still an impressive result.

Our Take On How To Train Your Dragon’s Digital Release Plan

How To Train Your Dragon’s Revenue Could Keep Growing

While its box office reign may be nearing the end of the road, How to Train Your Dragon could still become a digital hit. With summer break underway, the movie’s digital success actually seems incredibly likely, especially since families might view digital releases as a cheaper alternative to going to the theater. This could increase the overall earnings of How to Train Your Dragon as the movie generates revenue from digital sales.
