One of the most exciting aspects of the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is certainly going to be the introduction of Amy Rose. She was teased to be one of the new character additions during Sonic the Hedgehog 3‘s ending, which also showed off a first look at Metal Sonic.
While very little is currently known about the film, it is likely going to be based in part on the 1993 video game Sonic CD. That game had the introduction of Amy Rose and Metal Sonic, which does offer a few hints as to what the film could potentially be about.
The biggest theory that has arisen from this connection is that Sonic 4 could have a time-travel plot, as that was a big part of the game as well. However, there is another reference to Sonic CD‘s Amy introduction that would also be a great addition to the film adaptation.
Amy Rose’s Fortune Cards Should Appear In Sonic The Hedgehog 4
They Also Originated In Sonic CD, And Could Easily Explain Her Appearance
Amy’s Piko-Piko hammer is easily her most iconic piece of equipment. However, in some of the games, she also has a set of cards called Fortune Cards, which she can read to get a vague idea of the near future, very similar in concept and design to a set of tarot cards.
The Fortune Cards were actually introduced with Sonic CD, though they didn’t actually appear in the game. The cards were only mentioned in the Japanese version of the manual, which explained that they were the reason she appeared to find Sonic in the first place.
Amy’s Fortune Cards did appear in a Sonic CD cut scene, but that was only for the game re-release in Sonic Origins.
The cards also appeared in Sonic Frontiers‘ “Another Story” expansion, where Amy was made a playable character. She briefly used the cards to try and tell the future, to no avail, but their main usage was as part of her character’s moveset, which involved her using them to fight and traverse the map.
The question of how Amy knew exactly when and where to find Sonic just as he was being attacked by the Metal Sonic robots is going to need to be explained in one way or another.
Sonic 4 certainly isn’t going to be a direct adaptation of Sonic CD, as the movies have shown that they’re trying to make a universe that is very different from the video games, but this is one aspect of the original Sonic CD story that would also work very well in the upcoming installment.
While Sonic 3‘s post-credits scene isn’t a plot hole, how Amy knew exactly when and where to find Sonic just as he was being attacked by the Metal Sonic robots needs to be explained, and her Fortune Cards would be an excellent way of doing so. If there is time travel, she could have simply seen that she needed Sonic, and then traveled back through time to find the right version of him, kicking off the beginning of Sonic the Hedgehog 4‘s story.
