KPop Demon Hunters is primarily about Arden Cho’s Rumi, a half-human, half-demon hunter and K-pop singer of immense power and skill. KPop Demon Hunters’ great reviews are due to its concentration on telling a clean, effective story, which, for its first outing, didn’t leave too much time to explore Rumi’s powers.
However, one of the directors of the new hit Netflix movie has teased that Rumi’s capabilities are tumultuous, and have not seen their end. Like her fellow hunters Mira (May Hong) and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo), Rumi is skilled in combat and helps shield the Earth with the power of her voice — but her demon heritage means her powers likely go further.
Via Reddit, KPop Demon Hunters co-director Maggie Kang essentially confirmed that we have not seen the full extent of Rumi’s powers, which she likens to the inexplicable well of Neo’s abilities in The Matrix. Jinu (Ahn Hyo-seop) and other demons showcase their own magic in the movie, and we naturally wonder what Rumi could. Check out Kang’s full comment below:
Rumi is kind of an anomaly so we don’t know what she’s really capable of– kind of like Neo at the end of the Matrix. She is one of a kind having qualities of demon but also the powers of a Hunter. So… I would say her full powers are kind of a mystery.
What Rumi’s “Mystery” Powers Mean For KPop Demon Hunters
Kang’s Comments Again Suggest That KPop Demon Hunters Needs A Sequel To Tell Its Full Story
There has been much speculation about a KPop Demon Hunters sequel, or even a live-action take on KPop Demon Hunters, since the movie took over Netflix. Kang’s response to questions about Rumi’s full powers strongly hints at additional stories that go down this route, when the combination of her demon and hunter abilities could be astounding.
Rumi could become an even better hunter if she were ᴀssisted by the demon abilities of teleportation, levitation, and additional speed and strength. However, simply becoming a ᴅᴇᴀᴅlier hunter may not be what she wants, as she, Mira, and Zoey create a different Honmoon in KPop Demon Hunters’ ending to break away from the tradition of acting fearless.
The demon king Gwi-ma (Squid Game‘s Lee Byung-hun) also has power that allows him to manipulate people by stoking their worst fears and offering them a way out — and the story of the sequel being about Rumi turning this ability on its head could be especially intriguing, and in line with KPop Demon Hunters’ core themes so far.
Our Take On Rumi’s Powerful Potential In KPop Demon Hunters
We Are Ready To See Rumi’s Power Become Very Surreal
The comparison between Rumi and Neo has me especially excited for more KPop Demon Hunters, as it would be very satisfying to see Rumi become a protagonist with twisty powers that seem to have no end. Her adoptive mother Celine (Yunjin Kim) would never have encouraged her to explore her demon abilities, and this could be Rumi’s chance to harness all her strengths.
But as Neo remains grounded by his relationship with Trinity, Rumi should remain tethered by Mira and Zoey. Many characters who are affected by power creep tend to come across as too godly after a while, so it would be subversive for Rumi to become extremely powerful while still being down-to-earth and relatable. And, Huntr/x’s friendship will always be the soul of KPop Demon Hunters.
