The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Julia Garner Addresses The Controversy Surrounding Her Female Silver Surfer

The Fantastic Four: First Steps star Julia Garner addresses the Marvel Cinematic Universe controversy about her Silver Surfer. Marvel’s First Family is finally getting their due in the MCU timeline, as Marvel Studios’ The Fantastic Four: First Steps is getting closer to being released at the end of this month.

One of the characters who is part of The Fantastic Four: First Steps cast is the Silver Surfer, who serves as the Herald of Galactus. While there is still a lot of mystery surrounding Garner’s character, this will be the MCU’s first time exploring the Silver Surfer through the franchise.

During a new interview with BBC, Garner was asked about the reaction to The Fantastic Four: First Steps, including her Silver Surfer. When it came to some of the critical reactions, Garner shared the following while also addressing those who have been responding positively about The Fantastic Four: First Steps trailers:

The first one, I was like, I’m just still going to do my job, and also it’s Shalla-Bal, so it’s different. And then the second one you know, I was just happy that people are resonating with it just like any other project. So I’m just grateful to be at this dance, to be completely honest with you.

What Julia Garner’s Silver Surfer Story Means For The Fantastic Four: First Steps

While there have been those who have accused The Fantastic Four: First Steps of gender-bending the Silver Surfer, Garner’s story just serves as a perfect reminder that the MCU is actually pulling directly from the canon. Shalla-Bal has existed in Marvel Comics since August 1968, meaning she has been around for decades in the Fantastic Four mythology.

The narrative that the MCU has somehow erased Norrin Radd with Garner’s character has never been true, as he could always show up in future movies after The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Hearing Garner’s response just showcases that she has definitely done her homework for The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Our Take On Julia Garner’s Silver Surfer Story

The Fantastic Four First Steps cast suited up

While it’s unfortunate that some have turned Shalla into a controversy, it’s great to hear Garner push back on that notion for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. With Shalla’s introduction, it’s also possible that The Fantastic Four: First Steps story will address whether Norrin is part of her history or if they have yet to meet.

Depending on how The Fantastic Four: First Steps is received, there could always be a chance for a Silver Surfer spinoff where Shalla and Norrin get to shine together. That way, the MCU gets to explore them at the same time, while also playing with the idea of having more than one Silver Surfer in the franchise.

Since The Fantastic Four: First Steps will explore the heroes in a world that isn’t Earth-616, there is a lot more creative freedom for them. But to learn how this plays out, fans will have to catch The Fantastic Four: First Steps in theaters, starting on July 25, to find out what Garner’s Silver Surfer has in store for the MCU.
