Rumi, Zoey, & Mira’s Ages In KPop Demon Hunters Fully Detailed By Director

At the center of Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters are a trio of young women, whom many can relate to, though viewers may not know their exact ages. However, one of the directors of the streaming hit recently answered any questions fans might have about who is the oldest of the fictional demon-fighting K-pop group Huntr/x.

Best friends Rumi (Arden Cho), Mira (May Hong), and Zoey (Ji-young Yoo) have all found happiness and support in each other, which they didn’t have before. Mira’s darker mind made her the “black sheep” of her family, Zoey has always warded people off with her stream of ideas, and Rumi has a contentious relationship with her adoptive mother due to her demon heritage.

In an AMA session on Reddit, KPop Demon Hunters co-director Maggie Kang confirmed what she believes to be Rumi, Mira, and Zoey’s ages, to enthusiastic responses about characters being depicted in their 20s. Check out Kang’s full comment below:

I’ve always thought Rumi and Mira are the same age– 23/24, with Rumi being the older, 6 months older than Mira. And Zoey being the youngest at 22/23.

What Rumi, Mira, & Zoey’s Ages Mean For KPop Demon Hunters

Kang Adds Details To The Universe & Fleshes Out Huntr/x’s Group Dynamics

Kang names Rumi the oldest member of Huntr/x, followed by Mira (who is essentially the same age as Rumi, at only six months younger), then Zoey, about a year behind the two of them. This tracks with the dynamics portrayed in the movie (based on presumptions about older-younger sibling dynamics), where Rumi and Mira are more serious and Zoey is sillier.

Rumi fits into the image of the eldest sibling when she has the weight of the world on her shoulders, always hiding her demon patterns from her sisters and being the perfect hunter. She may feel that she has to set an example for the others to follow, when she is the legacy, as both her biological mother and adoptive mother were previous hunters.

On the other hand, this bit of trivia about the hunters’ exact ages is, in and of itself, simply a treat for the fans. Additionally, when media that is technically rated for younger audiences focuses on characters beyond their teens, it draws in slightly older audiences, who appreciate the way their experiences are represented in family-friendly form.

Our Take On Rumi, Mira, & Zoey’s Ages

It Serves KPop Demon Hunters Well, But They Could Subvert Tropes In The Next Movie

However, it would be nice to see a potential KPop Demon Hunters sequel subvert the typical sibling dynamic. What Kang reveals is what we might have guessed, based on the protagonists’ characterizations and our stereotypical imaginings of what older and younger sisters would act like. What’s great about it in this movie is that Rumi and Mira genuinely respect and incorporate Zoey’s ideas.

Yet KPop Demon Hunters’ ending sets up more, and it would be satisfying to see Zoey portrayed as a bit wiser in the next movie, perhaps coming to Rumi or Mira’s rescue in the final hour rather than following along with the collective self-realization. Those who are eager to see KPop Demon Hunters become a franchise are probably happy to know the characters’ ages — but now they can build upon what this means.
