Brendan Fraser’s First Leading Movie Post-Oscar Win Sets Release Date

Two years after his first Oscar win, Brendan Fraser‘s next leading movie finally gets a release date. During the late 1990s to the 2000s, Fraser was one of Hollywood’s brightest stars. He led The Mummy franchise and had other starring roles in films like George of the Jungle, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, and Journey to the Center of the Earth.

However, the actor took a career break in the 2010s, due to many factors that led to the actor shrinking away from the public eye. Later that decade, Fraser slowly started returning to Hollywood with roles in projects like DC’s Doom Patrol and Steven Soderbergh’s No Sudden Move.

After his Oscar win for The Whale, Fraser also appeared in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and 2024’s Brothers. The actor was also set to play Firefly in the canceled Batgirl film. He came back in 2022 in a big way in Darren Aronofsky’s The Whale. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2023, and his first leading film since his win finally has a release date.

Brendan Fraser’s Rental Family Has A Release Date

It’s Coming In November 2025

According to ᴅᴇᴀᴅline, Searchlight Pictures’ Rental Family will premiere on November 21, 2025. The film stars Fraser as a struggling American actor who lives in Tokyo, Japan. He begins working for a Japanese “rental family” company, portraying various stand-ins in people’s lives. Through this role, he finds connections and happiness with his new family.

Rental Family was directed by Hikari from a script she wrote with Stephen Blahut, and also stars Mari Yamamoto. It was filmed last Spring in Japan, and Fraser told ᴅᴇᴀᴅline that the filming location was a major reason why he was excited to star in the project.

“I couldn’t resist making this film for the opportunity to work there and to also blaze a trail. I think more and more productions are likely going start working their way towards shooting in Japan, considering there’s the production value.”

What Rental Family’s Release Date Means For The Film

Fraser Could Be Getting Oscar Buzz Again

Fraser’s role in Rental Family shows studios are more confident in giving him leading roles after his Oscar win. His comeback is one of Hollywood’s most inspiring stories, and audiences will be happy to see him leading another film. It may not be in an action movie, but he’s proven he can handle more prominent roles.

A November release date typically suggests the studio believes it could receive some awards attention. The Whale was released in December 2022, placing it firmly within award season. Fraser can deliver award-caliber performances, and he may be given another in this film. However, it could also be an attempt by Searchlight to take advantage of Thanksgiving.

Rental Family has a heartwarming story that would be perfect for the whole family. The narrative is open to plenty of comedy and tear-jerking moments, and would be something families could see together during that time. Hopefully, more award discussions will go Fraser’s way when the film premieres later this year.
