The new Sense and Sensibility adaptation has found its second female lead. Based on the iconic Jane Austen novel, Sense and Sensibility follows the Dashwood sisters, Elinor and Marianne, as they navigate a new reality following their father’s death and encounter potential suitors.
The book has been adapted a number of times, with the most notable being Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning 1995 movie starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet. Recently, it was revealed that Sense and Sensibility is being turned into a movie again, this time directed by Georgia Oakley. Normal People fan favorite Daisy Edgar-Jones will play Elinor.
Now, Edgar-Jones has found her onscreen sister. Focus Features confirms that Esmé Creed-Miles (Hanna, The Sandman) will play Marianne Dashwood in the upcoming film. Creed-Miles celebrated the news with a social media post showing her reading Austen’s novel. Check it out below:

Additionally, Focus Features welcomed Creed-Miles to the production by sharing a sH๏τ of her script side-by-side with Edgar-Jones’, writing, “The Marianne to our Elinor.”

What This Means For Sense And Sensibility
The Sister Relationship Is Important To Get Right
Though Austen’s romances often receive the most attention – and for good reason – the familial dynamics within her stories are just as important. This is especially true in Sense and Sensibility; the тιтle itself refers to Elinor and Marianne, and the ways their personalities are different.
Elinor is said to represent “sense,” while Marianne is “sensibility.”
Because of this, the casting of Marianne is perhaps even more vital than whoever will fill the roles of the love interests, though that will no doubt be an exciting occasion as well. Edgar-Jones and Creed-Miles already appear to be forging a supportive dynamic, with the former commenting on the latter’s post with a series of hearts.
Even the picture of their scripts feels reminiscent of their characters. Edgar-Jones’ is neat and perfectly pressed, reflecting Elinor’s restrained and tidy nature, while Creed-Miles’ is already bent and worn, as fitting Marianne’s more emotional, wild personality.
Our Take On The Sense And Sensibility Casting News
Focus Features Is Already Promoting This Movie In An Interesting Way
Focus Features seems to be making a meal of Sense and Sensibility‘s development, indicating the studio suspects it has a hit on its hands. This isn’t surprising, as Austen’s works have only grown more popular over the years, and previous adaptations, such as the 2005 Pride and Prejudice, have gained fervent fanbases of their own.
It already looks like this adaptation will keep Elinor and Marianne’s relationship at the very center, which I find to be incredibly exciting. Lee’s version of Sense and Sensibility is often considered one of the best Austen adaptations, so Oakley’s movie has a lot to live up to. So far, though, I’m hopeful that this will be a sweet, modern take on an excellent story.
