James Gunn Praises Movie With A Budget 15 Times Smaller Than Superman As One Of His “Favorite Movies Of The Past Few Years”

James Gunn has his first DCU movie coming out this week with Superman. However, while promoting the new DC movie, he took the time to discuss a different movie with which he had no involvement. He gave high praise for the release of Godzilla Minus One last year.

While out promoting Superman, James Gunn had a chance to take part in a discussion with Takashi Yamazaki, the director of Godzilla Minus One. It was a great moment and one that Gunn took seriously, as he gushed about his love for the kaiju movie (via Cinema Today):

“I’m a big fan of Godzilla Minus One. It’s just such a beautiful film. I think seeing movie makers who are able to make spectacle films like that, that are true to the nature of what a Godzilla film is… It’s not making fun of Godzilla movies; it totally loves them, and it also has the human element that is about people and human beings, first and foremost, and their plight.

It’s one of my favorite movies of the past few years, so thank you. I think that Godzilla Minus One is just so beautiful, though. It’s so many things. I really think it’s a revolutionary film.”

What This Means For Godzilla Minus One

James Gunn Bragged To The Minus One Director

James Gunn works for Warner Bros. as the head of the DCU. With his new movie bringing Superman back to Warner Bros., it’s interesting that Gunn chose to take the time to promote Godzilla Minus One, given that Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire was also released last year as a Warner Bros. film. However, this also speaks volumes for Godzilla Minus One.

The movie was a huge success, earning $113.67 million while receiving both color and black-and-white releases. While Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire beat that out with $572.3 million, critics and fans mostly agreed that Godzilla Minus One was the better film, and it even won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects.

Seeing Takashi Yamazaki beam with pride as Gunn complimented his film was a treat, and it was clear this meant a lot to him. Gunn also went on to say that too many people who make blockbuster movies don’t do it with love, and hinted that he can tell that Yamazaki put all his love into Godzilla Minus One.

Our Take On James Gunn’s Comments On Godzilla Minus One

James Gunn is entirely correct when discussing the brilliance of Godzilla Minus One. The film has a 99% Rotten Tomatoes score, with an audience rating of 98%, indicating that everyone loved what Takashi Yamazaki created with his movie. It is also important to note that Gunn didn’t openly bash Warner Bros.’ Godzilla film while praising the Toho film.

It also speaks volumes about what fans should expect from Superman. James Gunn openly states that filmmakers need to have a love for what they are making, and that is almost ᴀssuredly the case with his feelings towards Superman. Gunn reportedly has a spectacle movie with an emphasis on human kindness, and it should be similar to what Gunn loved about Godzilla Minus One.
