The 2025 Thriller You Definitely Missed In Cinemas Despite An 88% RT Score Finally Arrives On Streaming Next Week

2025 has been a rough year for the thriller genre at the box office. Movies classified as thrillers, such as Blumhouse’s The Woman in the Yard, have tended to struggle. Even on streaming, the Sydney Sweeney-led movie Echo Valley received mixed reviews when it hit Apple TV+.

Some thrillers have suffered despite their high-profile casts. Echo Valley, for instance, starred Sweeney (an Emmy nominee) as well as Oscar winner Julianne Moore. Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag featured Michael Fᴀssbender, Cate Blanchett, and Pierce Brosnan, and was one of the best-received movies in the thriller realm.

Another thriller came out this spring with a cast led by Rami Malek. Since his most famous role in the USA Network TV series Mr. Robot, Malek has become a major star. He won an Oscar for playing Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody. Now, his latest work is coming to streaming soon.

The Amateur Is Coming To Streaming

It Arrives Next Week

The Amateur has scored a streaming release date. The spy thriller is about a CIA worker who takes matters into his own hands when his supervisors refuse to take action after his wife is killed in a terrorist attack. Malek leads the cast, with a supporting team including Rachel Brosnahan, Jon Bernthal, Laurence Fishburne, Evan Milton, and Nick Mills.

The Amateur did not do as well at the box office, making a total of $96 million worldwide. While a respectable total, the film was made on a budget of $60 million. As such, it likely did not break even on the budget.

Now, The Amateur is arriving to stream on Hulu on July 17. Subscribers who have Hulu or the Hulu on Disney+ bundle will be able to stream the film starting on this date.

What This Means For The Amateur

The Film Could Have A Comeback

This streaming release marks the second chance for The Amateur to find its audience. In addition to its lackluster box office, The Amateur also got mixed reviews. Its Tomatometer sits at 61%, including a 7 out of 10 review from ScreenRant‘s Tatiana Hullender, who praised the film’s acting.

Even with low ticket sales, the audience has always been this movie’s greatest champion. The Amateur has a much better Popcornmeter than the Tomatometer, with 88%. This enthusiastic audience can come back to support the film when it gets to Hulu, giving The Amateur a second wind and a chance at success.
