Superman’s “Complicated” Relationship With The DCU’s Other Heroes Explained By Justice Gang Cast

Superman is almost here, and is set to ring in the new DC Universe in a big, bold way. The film is set to not only introduce David Corenswet’s take on the тιтular icon, but also invite audiences into a fully-fledged world populated with heroes and villains alike. Superman and other classic characters like Lois Lane and Lex Luthor will propel the action in the film, but viewers will also meet other superpowered humans (and, of course, Krypto the dog.)

Despite some initial concerns that the movie may be overstuffed with heroes, ScreenRant’s Superman review praised the vibrant cast of characters, which includes Justice Gang members Mister Terrific, Guy Gardner, and Hawkgirl. Played by Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced, respectively, the Justice Gang will also come into contact with Metamorpho, brought to life by Barry scene-stealer Anthony Carrigan. Based on teasers and trailer for Superman, the Justice Gang may be a less-than-stellar defense force for Metropolis, setting up an interesting dynamic with Kal-El.

ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan interviewed Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, and Anthony Carrigan about Superman’s Justice Gang and Metamorpho. The actors shared just how their characters feel about Superman entering the mix, and explained the relationships the metahumans have with one another. Plus, Fillion and Merced teased their characters’ upcoming appearances in other DC projects.

Don’t Expect The Justice Gang To Embrace Superman Immediately

“I’m Not Impressed So Far”

At first glance, Superman is a hard character not to like. He’s selfless, powerful, and apparently very well-intentioned. But characters like Guy Gardner are not immediately won over, shared Nathan Fillion: “I think Guy Gardner is looking at the new kid, [going], ‘Yeah, he’s super powerful,’ but [also with] a squinty side eye. I’m like, ‘All right, let’s see what he does. Let’s see how this guy does. I’m not impressed so far, but let’s see what happens.’

Isabela Merced echoed the sentiment, to a degree. “I think Hawkgirl probably underestimates him,” she shared, “or doesn’t even estimate him, just because he’s such a nice guy. I think she probably thinks he’s a pushover.”

Not all of the Justice Gang is suspicious of Superman, though, revealed Edi Gathegi. “Superman is, I think, cut from a similar cloth as Mr. Terrific,” the actor said. “He represents idealism, and Mr. Terrific is obsessed with ethics and doing things the right way.” Unlike other characters, Mr. Terrific also isn’t concerned about Superman’s seemingly unlimited power: “He doesn’t think that the more powerful you get, the worse you become, and Superman is the anтιтhesis to ‘Absolute power corrupts absolutely.’ He’s one of the strongest beings in the universe, but he leads with love.”

“I think Superman existing in this world, for Mr. Terrific, is like a kindred spirit.”

Audiences Will Learn More About The Heroes Of Superman Through Metamorpho

“[He] Goes On A Little Bit Of A Journey With The Audience”

“[He’s] just kind of bewildered, and goes on a little bit of journey with the audience, just kind of getting introduced [to the world]. It’s a fun dynamic.”

Hawkgirl & Guy Gardner’s DCU Returns Teased By Stars

Isabela Merced & Nathan Fillion Will Be Back

Superman and Guy Gardner face off in a green light in Superman

Gone are the days when a new character is introduced to a shared cinematic universe without an expectation that they will be seen again. Both Hawkgirl and Guy Gardner, for example, are confirmed to appear in Peacemaker season 2, and Gardner will also be seen in the upcoming series Lanterns. About Gardner’s return in the latter, Fillion had one quick tease: “He’s the same A-hole.”

“He’s nothing if not consistent. Consistently an A-hole.”

When asked how Hawkgirl keeps finding her way into the company of people like Peacemaker and the Justice Gang, Merced had a quip ready as well: “She signed a contract, probably.”

Superman hits theaters on July 11.
